Story Chain Creation

Students sit in a circle. The teacher starts a story with one sentence, and each student adds a sentence to continue the story. This can be done both orally and in written form. For older classes (4th-6th), add the challenge of including specific vocabulary words or literary devices. Time: 20-30 minutes.

Book Character Dress-Up Day

For world book day all the students in St. Brigid's Grange will dress up as their favorite character.

Buddy Reading Program

Pair older students (5th-6th class) with younger ones (1st-2nd class) for reading sessions. Older students can help younger ones with reading, ask comprehension questions, and discuss stories together. Create reading journals to track progress. Time: 20-30 minutes per session.

Author's Chair

Set up a special chair decorated as the 'Author's Chair'. Students take turns sitting in it to read their own written stories to the class. Encourage positive feedback and questions from the audience. Can be used for both creative writing and book reviews. Time: 5-10 minutes per student.

Vocabulary Word Wall

Create a wall display of where new vocabulary words become new bricks on the wall. Each student contributes words they've learned during the week, writing the word, definition, and using it in a sentence.

Reading Restaurant

Transform part of the classroom into a 'restaurant' where students 'order' books from different genres. They fill out 'menu cards' with book reviews and recommendations. Older students can be 'waiters' helping younger students choose books. Time: Set up as a break-time activity throughout the week.

Poetry Performance Festival

Students select, practice, and perform poems - either famous ones or their own creations. This can be completed throughout the literacy lesson that week.

Story Cube Challenge

Using large handmade story cubes (dice with pictures/words), students roll and create stories using the prompts they get. Younger classes can tell oral stories, while older classes write them down. Can be done individually or in small groups. Time: 30 minutes.

Reading Fort Day- DEAR READING

Students bring blankets to create reading forts in the classroom. Include cushions, torches, and comfortable spots to read. Can include hot chocolate and snacks for a cozy reading experience. Perfect for DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) time. Time: 40-60 minutes.

Book Cover Design Competition

Students redesign the cover of their favourite book or create a cover for their own story. Include the title, author, illustration, and blurb. Display all entries and have a class vote for different categories (Most Creative, Best Illustration, Most Intriguing Blurb, etc.). Time: 45-60 minutes.
