Many people died. Also, it was a  conflict that pitted the communist government of North Vietnam against South Vietnam and its principal ally.Both sides wanted the exact same thing: a unified Vietnam.

This event also included the Domino Theory. By 1962, the U.S. military presence in South Vietnam had reached some 9,000 troops, compared with fewer than 800 during the 1950s.
