Here is a link to an article outlining the study of the 56 top grossing films in 2018 in 20 countries.

The study focused on how women were represented and found that even if a female character was in a leadership position, they were shown as sex objects, undermining their role in the film. The study outlines a lot of factors such as 15% of films had female charcters slow motion camera movements on their body versus 4% with men, and other interesting facts. It´s a quick read with the article link at the end!
Since this article and study are from2019/2018 it would be interesting to reflect on if that has changed at all. The report has three recommended actions for change: Have we seen any of these changes in the recent years?

  • To be it, they must see it. Make stories about female leadership visible and normal. Stories need to encourage young women’s aspirations and ambitions, not undermine them;
  • Stop the sexualisation and the objectification of women and girls on screen and ensure content doesn’t discriminate or reinforce negative stereotypes and behaviour;
  • Fund female filmmakers, programme makers and content producers. Invest more time and money in women and girls as storytellers while addressing harassment and discrimination in the workplace to encourage girls and women into key positions in the media industry.
