This caused them to try to show off how much power they had, they had the arms race where both countries built as many nuclear weapons they can make, the containment where the U.S tried to stop the spread of Communism around the world, and the space race, which was whoever can get to space as fast as possible.

Another event was decolonization, it was when countries were starting to declare independence from colonizing countries like Britain and Spain, Africa started to declare independence from Europe as well as India and Pakistan. This caused for the great powers, the U.S and Soviet Union, wanting to "help" them but so they become part of their government system.
