There are actually many different "families" of ferns that can be found throughout the state. The one depicted below is a mountain spleenwort, also known as Asplenium montanum, and is part of the spleenwort family of ferns. This specific group of ferns is more suited for moist, shaded areas and grows best in limestone, sandstone, and rock crevices in granite.

Not only do humans tear down many of these forests for lumber and to build things, but climate changes have also effected these forests negatively. Warmer weather can extend the growing seasons and cause the areas to experience droughts. Wild fires from warmer weather also pose a threat to the deciduous forests.
