If someone has a sexual experience with someone of the same gender, does that mean they are gay/lesbian/bisexual? Who decides? Can someone’s sexual preferences change over their lifetime?

Labels and sexuality all goes down to each individual person. If a woman has an experience with another woman she may realize she is a lesbian or maybe she's bisexual or maybe she does not want to label herself at all. The important thing to know is that as long as people can love whoever they do without being judged and are happy labels do not really matter. As it is also important to know that as people get older and discover who they are they may have started liking guys and then decided that actually they only like girls, or just guys or both.

Are people in same gender relationships in Australia supported? What laws support or don’t support them? Can people in same gender relationships get married? How was this decided? Was this fair?

Although it was not that long ago, the vote of same sex marriage was passed and accepted through parliament in a very fair way by postal vote where people could mark either yes or no across Australia allowing same sex couples to marry if they wish to legally. There are also many communities and places people can go to feel seen and heard. The biggest issue faced by same sex couples are simply homophobic people not necessarily laws.

Research shows that young people are more homophobic in high school (aged 14–17) and less homophobic when they leave (aged 18–24). Why do you think this is?

A big reason as to why younger people are more homophobic in high school rather than after may come down to the lack of education in the matter. Being surrounded by mostly straight people can give the impression that being queer is wrong and should not be accepted. Whereas after school they may have learned a thing or two about how people are sometimes attracted to the same gender and that is nothing to be angry or ashamed about.

As much as I don't want to admit I feel I would not do anything but if it was directed at a friend or someone I know I might tell the perpetrator to shut up or to go away and stop bothering people.

Why might it be hard for a person to tell someone they are in an abusive relationship?

When someone is in an abusive relationship, the main reason why they might not reach out is that they are scared of what might happen to them by their own partner. If it is physical abuse they might be afraid to get injured because they spoke out about how they feel. Another reason can include denial and not believing that the relationship is toxic at all possibly because they are oblivious or because the partner is a mental manipulator and keep reassuring how much they love their partner.

For similar reasons to why someone might not reach out people in toxic abusive relationships may genuinely love the person they are with and may have grown up with their parents being abusive and think that is how relationships simply are. They my overlook all of the red flags that their partner shows and think its okay because they both love each other or so they say. The way people grow up and the way relationships are made up to be by their parents has a drastic affect of the future of the children when they grow up. If the parents are abusive its more likely that the child will be in an abusive relationship too.

By reaching out to online websites such as 1800 respect and talking to a professional online to get insights and advice on next steps. Or talking to a trusted family member or friend to get involved and break the pattern because even if the behavior or red flag happens once and they apologize it will always happen again not necessarily to the same person but to future partners as well.
