How to Choose a Career

Choosing a career isn’t just about choosing what field you will study in and then work in, but it is much more importantly about discovering your true passion and finding a way to make that passion what you will do to earn a living almost every day of your life in the future. Therefore, we shouldn’t look at career choosing from the point of view where we feel pressured to take one career or another, but where we freely choose a career that not only suits our interests and capabilities, but can also something that we can manage to make a living off of.

Knowing Your Skills and Interests:

Read about John Holland’s Theory of Career Choice and discover which personality best fits you.

Take some time to thoughtfully ponder and come up with a list that contains your skills and interests. Try being as specific as possible

Make A Broad List

Try using online tools such as careeronestop.com to translate your interests and skills into different specific career paths. One interest may correspond to multiple careers. Create a list of no more than 15 careers.

Do a little bit of research on the Holland personality that best fits you. Try to use your Holland personality to filter through your career list and remove any options that don’t fit your personality.

Shortening Your List:

Consider the financial aspect of your desired career. Keeping in mind how many people you would have to support, how much money would be deducted monthly for bills and rent, and how much money you would want to save, create a financial/ salary bracket your career should fit into. Research the median and starting salaries of the careers on your list. If any careers have salaries below your requirement, remove them from your list.

Consider your own time requirements. Eliminate any careers that don’t fit your requirements. For example, if you have absolutely no desire of working over 40 hours per week, you would remove doctor from your list, because most doctors spend a lot of time working overtime.

Consider your family. Are there any careers on your list that your parents or other respected family members desire that you wouldn’t pursue? Are there any careers that would take away too much of your family time? Set your own personal requirements and eliminate any options that don’t fit.

Confirm Your Interests:

Now that your list only has one or a few options remaining, try volunteering, job shadowing, or finding short term internships in these fields. Remove any options where you felt bored or felt like you wouldn’t be comfortable doing that type of job for the rest of your life. This will allow you to confirm you interests.

If All That Isn’t Enough:

If you still have multiple options remaining, first consult with family members and friends. Their advice can make a big difference on the way you think.

If you are still confused or still cannot decide your career path, go to a local university and discuss your situation with a career counselor. The counselor is a professional and has probably dealt with a case like yours before, so their advice would be the most credible

Why Was Computer Science My Choice?

Whenever anyone discusses career options or tries to choose a career, there are

a number of different things that have to be kept in mind. You have to make sure the career choice is something that you are really interested in, something you can do really well, something that fits your physical requirements, something that your parents would be fine with, and most importantly, something that would have jobs in the market and would have a manageable payroll for you. Once a career option fits all of these requirements, it is possibly the best career you can choose to pursue. For me, I think that career is Information Technology after pursuing a degree in Computer Science.

One of my favorite things is computers. I also really enjoy computer programming. I feel like I always have an urge to solve problems, and when someone gives me a problem, I have to solve by writing out a set of code, I will work constantly and enjoy my time trying to figure out a solution. When I was taking an elective on JavaScript, our teacher was really lenient with the online course and barely even required completing half of the course, and almost all of the class did the bare minimum, but I worked hard every class and even diligently spent some time at home getting through more and more coding exercises, and at the end, I nearly completed the online course.

The reason I would want a degree in Computer Science and not IT is that a degree-holder of Computer Science has a wide variety of job options, including Information Technology. This would lead to a much larger variety of available jobs, and this means I could also work in fields other than IT if I am unable to find a job in that particular field. Also, almost all the Computer Science related fields offer a very decent payload that would not only take care of my budget, but also allow for savings. Another thing is, both my parents agree that this is a good option for me and have no problem with it. They would also be able to support me very well because my dad is a Computer Science degree holder with his own IT company and my mom is a Computer Engineer. When it comes to a career that involves mainly computers, there are no physical requirements that would have an effect on the career.

I believe that after graduating with a Bachelors or Masters degree from hopefully a top university, I will be able to start working at a decent payload and would also be capable of supporting a family. I believe that this will be a way in which I am helping others by doing what I enjoy most. This is why I want to pursue a degree in Computer Science, and I feel quite solid-minded about this. In the end, people can try convincing you all they want, but only you know your true interests and passions.
