-  In classes where I have a paper warm-up, there's a little spot at the top of the warm-up box for students to write their check-in number.  As I circulate, checking homework and stamping warm up sheets, I glance at the number.  If it's a 1 or a 5, I try to stop and have a quick convo with them about what's going well and what's not.  Once the zen den is open, I'll offer any "1s" a chance to go there and regroup.

-  In classes where I have a digital warm-up, I ask students to show me on their fingers what their warm-up number is and then I walk around and acknowledge every single student's number.  They can show it to me privately (at their chest or under their desk) if they want. I have the same responses as above with 1s and 5s. 

To be honest, this is emotionally pretty draining.  On some days, it means I'm emotionally checking in with over 100 kids.  Even though most of them are 2, 3, or 4s, I feel the weight of trying to empathize with so many people....and not be phony about it?  Not just play lip service to it but really mean it?

I was inspired by our PCRC speaker at the beginning of the year to try to do this (and I very much appreciate the suggestion!), but I don't know if I'd keep it up in future years...but now that I've started for this year, I don't feel like I can stop.]]> 2023-09-29 15:48:27 UTC https://padlet.com/ahanson130/tufr74ra8ujp65b7/wish/2726260384
