He had Congolese origins, one Marshall's paternal grandfather had also been enslaved. Marshall went on High School in Baltimore and was placed in the class with the best students. He was able graduate a year early in 1925. He began as an american Jurist .In 1940, he pleaded for the first time successfully in front of the Supreme Court of the United States, in the affair Chambers v. Florida: the Court cancels the death sentence of four young Blacks who had eventually admitted a murder. In 1954 the segregation in the public schools is declared illegal. In 1967, president Johnson nominated Marshall to serve on the bench, he had successfully argued so many times before the United States Suppreme Court. He is the first Black to have sat, from 1967 till 1991, in the Supreme Court of the United States.
The Marshall Island was of use to the Supreme Court during twenty four years, drafting the stops(rulings) of several important decisions. He joins the dissenting opinion in the stop(ruling) Diamond v. Chakrabarty of 1980, grounds when the law did not authorize the patentability of the alive.

He leaves the court for reasons of health in 1991. President George Bush names Clarence Thomas to replace him.
 He obtains his diploma of right for the university Howard of Washington in 1933 and settles down as lawyer in Baltimore. Next year, he begins to work for the section of Baltimore of National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP or in French the national Association for the progress of people of color). Hetakes away his first trial mattering in an affair of civil rights, Murray v. Pearson in 1936, when the Supreme Court of the Maryland imposes Murray's admission, black student, on the faculty of law of the university of Baltimore, reserved for the Whites and who suggested financing his studies in a university of another State.
