Not just only I would like to ask for responsabilities because of the delay, but it had not the features that your company actually is advertasing on your website.

After surfing one more time on your website, it appears quite clear to me that the laptop I bought has the following main characteristics:
-Colour: White
-Speed: 2.5 GhW
-Weigh: 2 pounds
- Screen Size: 13 inches

In the image that it is attached to this email you could appreciate that the only feature that fit with what I initially pay for is just the colour. Unfortunately, I called to your customer service and they just told me that it was a logistic problem so they could do nothing more than give me the number of this departament. After several conversations with different employees, I have been informed to send you an email explaining this issue.

New research says that German and English speakers perceive the world in different ways – thanks to the grammatical toolkit they’re using. In the past few years there has been an overwhelming amount of research on the bilingual mind. Going back and forth between languages seems like brain training, pushing your brain to be more flexible.

Recently they studied German – English bilinguals and monolinguals to find out how different language patterns affected how they reacted in experiments. They showed video clips of events with a motion in them, such as a woman walking towards a car or a man cycling towards the supermarket and then ask them to describe the scenes.

German speakers will tend to describe the action but also the goal of the action. In this case the car. English monolingual speakers would simply describe those scenes as “A woman is walking” or “A man is cycling” without mentioning the goal of the action.

German speakers are more likely to focus on possible outcomes of people’s actions, but English speakers pay more attention to the action itself.

In the end we can say that the language you speak can affect the way you think.

C.C.

- German speakers tend to (not will), because will because it's a general truth.

Reaction Piece: How does the language we speak influence our perception of the world.

The articles does give a solid explanation on how our brain works when operating under a certain language logic or linguistic situation, giving many examples to solidify their point of view. 2|* I'm strongly convinced in the mentioned fact that our brain can interpret situations, colors and timelines differently when we use a certain language, since the words and constructions we use for time for example can effectively influence the way we interpret the situations we face in life time wise speaking in a specific language, like when German speakers normally presume the outcome of an action and when English speakers focus on the action itself, or when people can become influenced by the way a person with a high media wise influence speaks.*3
However, we need to be careful with too extremist or ethnocentric ideas, like some of Whorf's remarks when he said that the Hopi can't interpret time, we should keep in mind that linguistic differences doesn't necessarily make a language better or worse than other, but instead, they make it unique, with it's own characteristics and qualities, and we should also keep and eye to behaviors that might give less credit to the importance of language.

Vinicius Calazans

1. The articles gives a solid explanation.
You can use DOES give for emphasis, however it would be usually contrasted with another point.
e.g. This article doesn't adequately explain how the brain processes new language. However, it does give a solid explanation...
2. I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to say here.
3. The content of this sentence is strong, with good vocabulary. However, it is an extremely long sentence, which we tend to avoid in English. This paragraph would have more rhetorical impact if you seperated this into smaller sentences.

Donald Trump is changing our language

Communicating through <del>the </del>language probably has more importance if your are the president of one of the most important countries <del>of </del> in the world. The article introduce in a very nicely way the language resistance topic reffering to Nazism. It is <del>worldwide</del> recognised worldwide that what happened during the Second War World must be forgotten or at least must help us to learn from our mistakes. However, the article introduces <del>the </del>language perception elegantly even starting with <del>the </del>Nazism speeches.

During <del>the </del>Nazism, something that allowed it to rapidly spread among the population was language, the way of approaching people and how people communicated. They had to be clear and connect directly with people. Therefore, if someone has no defence at all or is too weak he might be affected by the ideology behind this language. Therefore, there has always <del>has </del>been a need of a resistance language, as the articles refers to. Not just only when <del>the </del>Nazism was among us, but after the election of Donald Trump as president.

Being a president of the USA means that his speechless are going to be heard by the whole world. Before Trumps´ election, all presidents from the USA communicated their different measures or ideas in a very formal way. But after Trump, this has changed dramatically. It has led to the progressive parties to a call for more "moral language" as they know the impact that the way of communicating threw language can have on the population itself.

Therefore. what I think the article tries to transmit is that the language is not just related to try to communicate in a certain way. It is directly connected with the listener and the people aware of this language who must recognise when a language is being used badly.

1. If we are talking about a topic in general we usually omit the article.

Research into bilingual minds 1* proved that speaking more than one language not only delay cognitive ageing and age-related degenerative disorders, but also changes the way the speaker sees and interacts with his or her surrounding. German-English bilinguals and monolinguals were tested in experiments with description of scenes involving motion. The results showed that monolingual speakers tend to describe the scene in correlation with their worldview, meaning the German ones tend to focus on the action itself and on its goal, differing from the English ones, that focused only on the action itself. This has to do with the grammatical structure of the languages. English speakers 2* have the obligation to mark ongoing events using -ing, while German speakers do not.

On the other hand, bilingual speakers changed their description perspectives based on the language in which the task was given, meaning that their focus was highly influenced by the language of the assignement.
In addition to that, bilinguals also tend to make more rational decisions when speaking their second language, due to the fact that it lacks affective biases that influences pondering consequences.

Those new evidences erode the theory that people behave differently dependeing on the language spoken, and claims the necessity for further research about (it) until which point learning a new language affects your brain.

Pedro Land
1 - proved that speaking more than one language not only delay cognitive ageing and age-related degenerative disorders,
Has proven ....not only delays
Use the present perfect because it is a past action that is important to the present and is often used to talk about the outcomes of research/findings.
2- are obligated to (the common collocation is to be obligated to, rather than have the obligation)

All three articles provide some interesting thoughts on how our language influences our way of thinking. As a German and English speaker, I particularly enjoyed the article “Think your world view is fixed? Learn another language and you’ll think differently “. The article presented a relatable and unique reflexion on the differences in thinking between the two languages. Although I sorely enjoyed reading it, I can imagine that it might be a little dull for non-German-speakers as the text fails to provide sufficient examples from other languages. On another note all articles encouraged me to approach language differently, they made me realise how little thought I’d given the topic so far. After reading these articles I feel strongly encouraged to look into the matter more deeply.

S. Settele

1. We wouldn't use this sorely as a collocation with enjoyed. In this context, thoroughly enjoyed is more appropriate.
Sorely is most often used in negative contexts - these are the most common collocations -
sorely missed/tempted.

I agree with the idea of the article. If we speak another language, we can see things in a different way. The article says "Now new research shows that they can also view the world in different ways depending on the language they are operating in."

My mother tongue is Japanese and when I compare English with Japanese, I think English is more logical and objective. For example, when we speak Japanese, we don't have to say a subject so usually we just guess that what a speaker wants to say. So when I speak English, I feel like I recognize and <del>tell</del> say things more directly and clearly.

I think we can learn our way of thinking, culture, values and so on through learning other languages.

An exceptionally entertaining movie with fantastic and original songs. Although the Greatest Showman is based on a real story it's as opposite to a mind-numbing documentary as it could possibly be.

The film tells the story of the first ever circus and its founder P. T. Barnum in an emotional and catching way. It’s a rags to riches story of a young tailor’s boy dreaming of the world ahead of him. The musical convinces with its diverse range of songs, all of them special and touching in their own way. It does an amazing job in showing that everyone can reach something in live no matter who they are and what they look like, just by being themselves.

The movie features a range of famous actors such as Hugh Jackman, Zack Efron and Zendaya and they all manage to exceed the high expectations. Even though it has only been realised rougly a month ago it has already received a Golden Globe Award for "Best Original Song".

Overall the movie offers a fantastic opportunity to escape your daily life and relax. It is bound to entertain grown ups as well as kids and definitely shouldn’t be missed!

S. Settele

The movie is based on the horror novel of Stephen King centred around kids and how they need to fight their fears. Even though the main actors are just kids all of them show an outstanding performance, especially Finn Wolfhard him already famous for Stranger Things.
The film tells the story of small town in America that is cursed by an evil that makes kids disappear more than every other town in America. The kids will need to face their biggest fears to fight the evil by themselves. The evil is represented by a clown, the movie could had explored more about the past of this clown, due to the fact that it's not very clear the origin of the clown.
In this spectacular production there are lot of amazing scenes with commendable special effects. The film make very clear its message that we should fight our fears.

In the brand-new adventure film Jumanji – Welcome to the jungle four teenagers are sucked into the world of Jumanji. When they find an old video game console with a game they’ve never seen, they’re immediately thrust into the game’s jungle setting becoming the adult avatars they have chosen. They must fight their way out of the game – otherwise they will die in the game. By now Jumanji – Welcome to the Jungle is the funniest movie and has become a global phenomenon. A must see for everybody.

Visually, the Hawaiian locations provide eye – catching views for the effect of heavy action, with beasts and thrilling helicopter stunts. At this point, there’s no movie that The Rock doesn’t make better by his presence. It’s even funnier because he must play being amazed by his own strength, considering he’s the nerdy Spencer inside. All adult actors do a good job, playing the insecure and horrified teens controlling their avatars.

Overall the movie offers a great opportunity to laugh and escape the seriousness of our lives. It’s a film for teenagers and grownups as kids wouldn’t understand all jokes.

C.C.

"Life Is Beautiful" must be a truly great moving story for everyone. It has a lasting effect on me. This fascinating film is a 1997 Italian comedy-drama and the plot focuses on Jewish parents' love for their children, inner strength and courage.

When WWⅡ breaks out, the Jewish family and many other Jews are forced to go to a concentration camp and they become victims. In the terrible camp, the father hides their true situation from his son. The father explains to his son that the camp is a complicated game not to frighten the son and to protect him. So the son believes the camp is a game to enjoy and he never knows the true situation.

The protagonist, the father, is an open-minded Jewish librarian. He uses a perfect mixture of will, humor, and imagination to protect his son from the dangers around their camp. The story is about a seriously brutal history but the father tries to make the situation fun so it's acted in a funny way. I can't help feeling how deep parents' affection is.

I highly recommend it. It will touch your heart and make you think of your family and friends . This absolutely beautiful movie is well worth seeing!

C. K.

Being able to watch a Agatha Christie’s creation it’s a spectacular experience for anyone. Book inspired movies are typically a devastating disaster, yet “Crooked House” fortunately didn’t turn out to be one of those.
The story takes place in a British 40’s mansion, where a peculiar family lives. Their routine changes when the owner of the great house gets murdered and it’s the mission of a young detective to discover who is the assassin. What is really intriguing is that the spectator knows as much as the detective, who tries to understand how that crooked family behaves.

The actors truly captured the ideia of a ideal Agatha Christie’s character, with a dramatic and almost comic acting, which couldn’t be better. Besides that, the director managed to not completely change the story, but was capable of creating a captivating scenario we would never be able to see in the book.
Make sure to watch this amazing movie or you’ll miss a great expirience.
Enzo Santomartino

Unabomber is an in-depth look at how an FBI profiler helped track down the terrorist Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber. It is TV series and what really shocked the audience from the first episode is that is based on true events in the USA of the 90s, when the Unabomber panicked the public.

IT consists of 8 episodes, where different clues keep appearing and where each episode ends with such a surprisingly end that really hooked the audience. After several terrorist attacks, the FBI called on a new kind of profiler to help track down the elusive killer. Unfortunately, after a very strong beginning it turned into a wooden storyline. Somehow, the director partly lost the spectator (but not me) as this latter did not know if the plot was focus on the FBI agent or the killer.

Anyway, Unabomber combined all the flavours that a TV thriller should have. The dialogue was not stilted and the acting was very convincing. Even though is based on a true story, the TV series achieved the audience not look up the end on the net but wait for discover it while watching the final ending.

So if you are keen on TV thrillers and you like to lap up TV series, Manhunt must be essential on your list.

Carlos del Rosal

Known for its delivery of overall stilted and uninspired movies, it was, at first, hard to believe that DC had put out a solid story that was already winning fans over. I had no choice but to give it a watch.

The movie revolves around the famous heroine as she grows up on an island of female warriors, the amazons, and eventually leaves it to fight in WWI, an event that she believes to be Ares, the god of war’s doing. Her plan is to find Ares, defeat him, and, by default, bring peace back to a war torn world. But she has to do it as fast as she can, as Ares is working on a new weapon that will bring even more mass destruction.

The plot is deeply impactful in its depiction of war and the grey moral area that goes along with it. It doesn’t try to be exceptionally brutal, and by doing that, it gives a strong message for the whole family. The characters are mostly distinct and well developed, and the environment just enhances the sense of urgency in every decision they make, which makes the movie even more engaging. The best, though, by far, is the protagonist herself, played by the wonderful Gal Gadot. She has such a naive view of the world, and, yet, such a strong will towards helping others, you can’t help but want her to succeed. Sequences of heart-stopping stunts and exciting action are also part of the package.

In a nutshell, the film is a nice refreshing achievement for DC, that empowers women, but is not solely in service of that. It has good story, characters, romance and action. All the things you need for a good experience. It’s the perfect movie to take your family to - especially your daughters.

Gabriela Sarubbi

Movie review: "Ghost in the Shell" (1995) (Rewritten)

The anime genre has always been famous, not only in Japan, but worldwide, because of its variety of content and versatility, and it wouldn't be different with the successful 1995 movie "Ghost in the Shell".

This masterpiece is about a futuristic world in which technology and humans are extremely evolved and intrinsically connected, with people being able to swap their limbs, organs and even their brain with cybernetic variations. Sometimes even better than their organic counterparts, effectively turning them into cyborgs.

The protagonist is a female cyborg named Motoko Kusanagi, that works as a police officer that fights cyber-crimes. Due to her cybernetic body (including her brain) she has many super human capabilities, such as super strength, agility, thermo-optical camouflage and the ability to hack almost anything with her cyber brain.

Even though the animation seems to be a simple Sci-fi movie, anyone that watches it will be surprised to discover that the main focus of the movie is actually philosophy. Questions such as "what makes us humans" and "what is ethical in a technological world" are constantly discussed and dissected in it, and in an extremely unique and unexpected way, because of its unconventional scenario and innovative overall concept.

Ghost in the Shell is not a movie for everyone. Its approach is very serious and can be really confusing to understand, even for a fully grown adult. But for those who are willing to spend their time analysing this wonderful cinematographic work are in for an unforgettable experience, full of creative animations, ideas and overall concept, that was also the spark for the creation of the phenomenal GitS animation franchise.

In a nutshell, this is a classic anime movie, that is absolutely worth the effort, may change your view of the world and can really be excellent for thinking about humanity in general.

Vinícius Calazans

Life Is Beautiful" is a truly great moving story for everyone. It's had a lasting effect on me. This fascinating film is a 1997 Italian comedy-drama and the plot focuses on Jewish parents' love for their children, inner strength and courage.

When WWⅡ breaks out, the Jewish family and many other Jews are deported to a concentration camp and they become victims. In the terrible camp, the father hides their true situation from his son. The father explains to his son that the camp is a complicated game not to frighten the son and to protect him. So the son believes the camp is a game to enjoy and he never knows the true situation.

The protagonist, the father, is an open-minded but eccentric Jewish librarian.

Give it a watch!

C. K.

When they find an old video game console with a game they’ve never seen before, they’re immediately thrust into the game’s jungle setting becoming the adult avatars they have chosen. They must fight their way out of the game – otherwise they will die in the game. By now Jumanji – Welcome to the Jungle is the funniest movie I have ever seen and has become a global phenomenon. A must see for everybody.

Visually, the Hawaiian locations provide eye – catching views for the effect of heavy action, with beasts and thrilling helicopter stunts. At this point, there’s no movie that The Rock hasn't made better by his presence. It’s even funnier because he has to pretend being amazed by his own strength, considering he’s the nerdy Spencer inside. All adult actors do a good job, playing the insecure and horrified teens controlling their avatars.

Overall the movie offers a great opportunity to laugh and escape the seriousness of our lives. It’s a film for teenagers and grownups as kids wouldn’t understand all jokes.

An exceptionally entertaining movie with fantastic original songs. Although “The Greatest Showman” is based on a real story it's as opposite to a mind-numbing documentary as it could possibly be.

The film narrates the story of the first ever circus and its founder P. T. Barnum, displaying a perfect mixture of emotionality and entertainment. It’s a rags-to-riches story of a young tailor’s boy dreaming of a world that he designs. The musical convinces with its diverse range of songs, all of them special and touching in their own unique way. It excels in showing that everyone can reach something in live no matter who they are and what they look like, just by being themselves.

This spectacular production features a range of famous actors such as Hugh Jackman, Zack Efron and Zendaya and they all managed to exceed great expectations. Even though it was only released roughly a month ago it already received a Golden Globe Award for "Best Original Song".

Overall, the movie offers a fantastic opportunity to escape your daily life and laze.

The story, the main characters and even the plot are already know by the majority of the people. So is particularly difficult for a director to tell the fascinating story of King Arthur. A lot of them had tried already.

Firstly I have to confess that my expectations for the film weren’t pretty low. I wasn’t attract to see another King Arthur’s film but after only 2 minutes in the cinema I fell into the Camelot’s atmosphere. Guy Ritchie, under my point of view had realized it in a very catching way.

When I saw it I was entirely overwhelmed by the music that mixed with the special effect gave me the opportunity to fight against the uncle of Arthur Pendragon, Vortigern; to see how the future King of Camelot tried to have back his born right to reign.

The film has also first-class actors that really fill in the different characters: Charlie Hunnam as King Arthur, Jude Law as Vortigern, Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey, Djimon Hounsou, Aidan Gillen and Eric Bana.

It’s a must. You have to see this story under an innovative approach.

Marta Valenti

It is by Brian Freeman who perfectly plays with <del>the </del>obsession and revenge, making a story that grips the reader with vivid characters and such a shocking plot that makes the book even more page-turner.

The main protagonist, Lieutenant Jonathan Stride is suffering from an ugly case of deja vu.
Homework 5th February: The death of language

About 6,000 different languages are spoken around the world. But scientists estimate between 500 and 1,000 languages as Endangered languages. Those are spoken by only a handful of people. Every year the world loses around 25 mother tongues. Unfortunately, the death of a language is the most obvious symptom of an acute human crisis. But are dying languages worth saving?

One argument for saving dying languages is the wealth of wisdom. Some languages contain an accumulated body of knowledge. For instance, about geography, zoology, navigation, astronomy, pharmacology, botany and more. We will lose all this knowledge when there are no languages for it and nobody understands it.

For many people languages are a way of interpreting the world. As such, they can provide insight into psychology. For this reason, linguists are trying to document and archive the diversity of quickly disappearing languages. They make dictionaries, record histories and traditions. If they do so, there might be a chance that these languages can be revitalized in the future. But without speakers the effort will be for nothing.

But what’s the point of trying to save a language when there are no one who speaks it. The purpose of language is communication. We can quantify how a good a language is by how many people you can speak with. Nowadays it is necessary to speak English as you can speak almost to everybody around the world. On the contrary there is no point of learning a language with is spoken only in one country in the world.

Some languages are worth saving. There should always be people who speak the same language as you. You can share jokes or experiences with them. Language is a tool that’s perfectly adapted by the people who use it.

C.C

I disagree with the idea "dying languages are not worth saving" . Language is not only a tool of communication but also contains beneficial knowledge, unique culture and different thinking. We can learn a lot of things from languages. If a language die once, we can never learn from it.

When I saw" unesco atlas of world languages" I was really surprised that there were 8 languages in Japan. I thought only Japanese and Ainu were spoken in Japan. I think a lot of Japanese don't know about minor languages and the government doesn't regard them as important ones. Also people who speak minor language start learning major language to acquire education and get a job.

On the other hand, as an article says, if a language isn't spoken anyone , the language is not a language anymore, it's more like a heritage. It means demand for the language has decreased. It doesn't have the function of communication anymore. If so, It's hard to spread the language widely.

As far as I'm concerned, we need to preserve dying languages but learning how to speak or how to write the languages does not have to be obligatory. It should be optional. Language experts, researchers or people who are interested in the language can learn them. We can learn their studies and research. However, to let many people recognize the problem, the government should do publicity campaigns. The more people realize the issue and how important language is, the more people get interested in it and the movement would start.

C. K.

Are dying languages worth saving?

Each of the 6,000 Languages that we accommodate on this planet has its own unique culture, no two languages are the same. Therefore, losing a language automatically means losing a piece of our diverse range of cultures. Which would logically mean that there lies a certain value in saving dying languages. However, it is vital to consider the probability of that kind of attempt being successful because there is a crucial question that we might not have a satisfying answer for: How does one save a language?

Personally, I believe that saving a dying language is an honourable idea, but I see no point in forcing people to learn a certain language. Because after all language isn’t just facts its emotions, passion and culture. I am utterly convinced that the only efficient way of saving a language is from within its native speaking community. If a member of a tribe realises that fewer descedants master the original tribal language it seems likely that he will be successful in teaching it to his own kids again, as well as convincing other members to do the same. Contrariwise, if a governmental program aims to preserve that language and forces tribe members to learn it they might learn parts of it, but it seems likely that most of them won’t find a passion for speaking it and as result won’t integrate it into their daily life.

A language that is not needed and not wanted doesn’t seem to stand a chance nowadays. This could possibly result in more and more languages dying and a few languages surviving such as English, Spanish and Chinese. As sad as it might be to see languages dying, I’m afraid that we do have enough things to save and protect apart from languages.

S. Settele

Globalization is the progress by which the world is becoming interconnected because of international trade and cultural exchange. This progress has increased the production of goods and services. In the past years national firms became multinational companies with factories all over the world.

I don’t really know where I stand, for me globalization has positive and negative effects on our society. It might seem good for developed countries but that doesn’t mean it’s also good for developing countries. One negative effect would be that multinational companies dominate the market in the country. If they build big supermarkets, smaller local shops will disappear. This leads to less diversity.

One positive effect of globalization is that multinational companies can create new jobs. They can open new job markets in areas of the world where there are none. I’m totally in favour of that because I think it is important to give this people the opportunity to work. If more people would have a job, the unemployment rate will be lower, and more people can escape from the circle of poverty.

In the end we cannot deny the fact that the progress of globalization has negative and positive effects on our economy. Even if they build new infrastructures and factories, local people will lose parts of their culture.

C.C

The graph presents the evolution of the market capitalization of listed domestic companies around the world from 1975 to 2016. The market capitalization of each company (in trillion USD) is the result of multiplying the nominal value of its shares by the total number of shares. As shown in the graph, it was not until the 90’s that the market capitalization increased significantly.

Between 1975 and 1990 the expansion of multination companies barely was significant. However, technology finally boosted in the 90´s explaining the turmoil during these years. It was not until 1995 that the main firms of the different sectors experienced an important raise in their value as they consciously invested in the suppose benefits of technology. Nevertheless, the stock prices decreased abruptly as the economic world suffered from its first financial crisis between 2000 and 2003 due to the boom of the extreme and uncontrollable use of the technology.

The change in value that companies experienced in 2003 was unprecedent. The market price doubled in roughly five years, reaching one of the main peaks the previous year of the last known financial crisis. It was this crisis that caused the crash of the companies’ equity to similar levels to those achieved the previous decade. After several restructurings through the financial sector, apart from another significant decrease given the collapse in 2010 of the oil prices, the tendency changed to a positive behaviour from 2009 onwards.

To sum up, although the pace of increase was not relevant until 1990, the market capitalization has evolved from 1 trillion USD in 1975 to more than 60 trillion USD in 2015. IT should be noted that it has not always increasing as it was really affected by both financial crisis.

CdRL

The chart presents the percentage of people who voted in the 2001 UK parliamentary elections compared to 1983 and sorted by age groups. Overall, the chart shows that participation in the elections has decreased significantly.

The participation rates in 1983 were highest in the groups between the age of 35 and 64 while younger citizens as well as the oldest took part in the election less commonly. This trend has slightly shifted over time until 2001, showing a drop in participation through all ages except 65+. In the meantime, voting behaviour of the over 65 year olds has been nearly unchanged showing only a slight increase.

In the year 2001 participation seems to have been directly connected to age and more people would vote who are in a higher group of age. The younger groups of citizens have seen a further decrease although they already had a lower rate of participations back in 1983.

The statistics prove that overall less people are taking part in the elections and the age distribution shifted slightly.

S.
Nuclear energy

These days a lot of countries use nuclear energy and there have been some accidents and disasters in nuclear facilities. So banning using nuclear energy sounds a good idea in theory, but just not in practice.

I suppose nuclear energy might be a only way to get no effect of climate change and to prevent grobal warming. Compared to fossil fuel, nuclear energy is relatively clean as long as it's safe . Fossil fuel produces carbon dioxide and it is the main cause of global warming. So nuclear energy can Reduce CO2 emissions. If we are going to use more fossil fuel, it will worsen situation of environment.

However, nuclear energy has some problems. One of the biggest problems is nuclear waste and pollution. It has extremely poisonous chemical elements and it takes over several tens of thousands of years to lose its harmfulness. We usually bury it but we still can't find a place where it will definitely stay secure for many years. Supposing it wasn't safe, what would happen to us?

Also as I mentioned, some terrible accidents have happened, for instance in Chernobyl. Even now people can't go to a certain place. The harmfulness lasts long and have a damaging effect on humans' body. The risks may outweigh the benefits.

On the other hand, we couldn't find an alternative eco-friendly way to produce energy effectively. That's why a lot of countries which are poor in natural resources rely on nuclear energy and stick to it. So in my opinion, we couldn't change the present situation unless new innovative technology comes up.

Chikako Kinoshita

I arrived in Oxford seven weeks ago. Because job reasons, I had the chance of coming 2 months to UK to gain confidence with my English. Since everything was too fast, I had to decide between looking for a temporary work in UK and studying in an academy. Finally, I leaned towards the learning choice due mainly to the limit period of time that I had here. As I wanted to take advantage on the whole experience, I chose to be in a homestay rather than in a residence.

All considered, it was neither the family nor the house that I was expecting. The former because the family weren´t native English speakers and they didn´t even make the effort to speak to me; and the latter due to the house was all disorganised and dirty. However, as I´m considered myself an open-minded person, I always tried to approach the family and even clean a little bit the kitchen’s table to have at least a place where to eat. Fortunately, I moved one month ago to another homestay with other family who is quite the opposite.

People told me that London could be a good choice. As for me, Oxford has been a better choice. Because in my job I’ll have to speak with clients from all over the world, one of my goals since I arrived here was to speak with people from different countries. Oxford is a perfect city because the likelihood of meeting people from Europe, Asia and overseas through events such as toastmaster (public speeches), coachsurfing and meetup is very high.

Overall, I´d consider that my experience in Oxford has been very palatable. However, it must be said that perhaps it would have been more productive to be working in a company meanwhile learning and speaking in English.

Carlos del Rosal

I have been having a wonderful time in Oxford. Living in a foreign country is my biggest dream so I'm a kind of in my dream now. Everything is new and fun.

The most exciting thing is what I feel like I'm in a movie. Even when I just go to school, I can pass places which are used in movies such as x-men and Harry Potter. Every morning they draw me into the fantasy world and I can immerse myself in a romantic atmosphere.

Also I enjoy shopping. I'm tall and have big feet for Japanese so sometimes I can't find clothes and shoes in my appropriate size. Japanese shops usually have only 3 sizes. However, there are great ranges of sizes here so it's not hard to get my favorite clothes here.

Most things vary from Japanese yet, some things are similar. For example, my hometown, Nagasaki, has ground that is made of stones. So the road in Oxford reminds me of my hometown. Also people who walk fast recall my hometown. I've expected Oxford was a serene city and people had slow life without stress in contrast to my hectic city. However, especially in the morning, people walk so fast and some people look tired. My friends who study at Oxford university look exhausted every day. I've realized that is life.

Overall, I really like Oxford. It's a countryside but we can enjoy pubs, shopping, sightseeing and so on. I want to come here again with my family and friends. My 3 months here would be my unforgettable period of time in my life.

Chikako Kinoshita

They seemed so distant and otherworldly, a bit like heaven on earth.
Lovely description

When I was 11 years old I got the chance to actually go there and see them and truly experience life in a small village there, which was certainly the most unique experience in my life so far. When we look at pictures of such places we never really try to imagine what life there is actually like, so I was surprised to see all those people working so hard barely managing to keep their head above water.

As I was staying there with my parents and a group of 25 undergraduates who were all snowed under with work, I used to wander around a bit on my own.

My university life started 3 years ago. My university is far from my hometown so I started living alone for the first time in my life. Everything was new. A new place to live, new friends and a new life.

I was over the moon and so excited about my new life. I wanted to do as many things as possible. So firstly, I applied for three part-time jobs: a tutor, a hotel staff and a waitress in a bar. Also I was keen on kendo, which is a Japanese traditional sport so I decided to belong to the club. Additionally, I started to do a volunteer work in schools.

As you can guess, my new life has turned out miserable. I was absolutely tied up. I was slaving away to do three part time jobs. I had to practice kendo every day. Before exams, I was snowed under a bunch of reports and studies. I was trying to keep my head above the water desperately. I shouldn't have been bitten off more than I can chew.

To escape the pity life and to study English, I've left Japan. After that, I've really enjoyed myself here. My life here is like a paradise. However, at the same time, I kind of miss my hectic days. I've had a really tight schedule but I've realized I had actually enjoyed it. On the other hand, I'm afraid of not being able to do things like before because once I've got lazy, it's hard to pull my socks up again . I'm going to face it in a week.....My real life is waiting for me in Japan!

Chikako Kinoshita

In season 7 episode 22, the two vampire brothers Stefan and Damon try to help and save their friend Bonnie. In order to save her, they need to sacrifice themselves, in the end, they succeed saving Bonnie from the devil who cursed her in the first in the place, without the need of sacrificing themselves. But after suceding succeeding in saving their friend, something occurred.

After Damon goes inside this black magic gate, looking for something which he had to destroy (to save) <del>for a purpose of saving</del><del> </del>Bonnie.

In my opinion we must distinguish between global governance and global government. While the first one is a system to solve issues and to assess situations to, the second term describes an authority that has the power to realise its aims. As we have to deal with many problems that consider us globally, I think that global guidance is essential. When we all use similar ways to handle global obstacles we’ll be much more successful.

I suppose we’re already having a global governance, but not a global government. International contracts and deals, often considering environmental issues are a clear example. I might be wrong but I believe that global government is something we’ll never achieve. Countries would lose sovereignty by agreeing to such a deal. Each one has its specific problems and I see no way to unite them in one government. That means that no country can really be forced to stick to rules, suggested by other countries. So in the end, each and every government is demanded to show good-will for finding globally working solutions. For me that’s the key to a better place.

Karin Hediger

Sending criminals to prison will punish the inmates in many different ways. For example, losing their privacy and freedom is not the best element they want to lose.

Prisons have developed into what they are today, having started about 2,000 years ago, as a way of vengeance, often performed by the victims themselves, including having them physically and non-physically punished, to being a way of avoiding death, and finally, a legal form of holding people as a punishment for a crime.

During the last half century, H.L.A. Hart, and John Rawls have believed it to be ideologically neutral, having it defined from the Roman law, nullum crimen sine lege and nulla poena sine lege (No crime without law, no punishment without law) in which sense, justification of any act of punishment is to be done by reference of the norms. However , we have to take into account how people perceive this form of punishment, given that sometimes, is a form of vengeance; behavioral scientists have observed that instead of quenching hostility, revenge can prolong the unpleasantness of the original offense and that merely bringing harm upon the offender is not enough to satisfy a person’s vengeful spirit. Therefore, justice is not what is performed, but instead, the creation of a cycle of retaliation.

Moreover, because prison is some form of deprivation for the person behind bars, the infliction of itself provides unparalleled opportunity for abuse of power. This is especially true where penalty through the legal system is concerned, since they, at the system’s disposal—as well as the abuses—are typically severe, having it validated by whatever constitutes the sentence as such and whatever justifies it. And so, I believe, that the drawbacks outweigh the benefits that this form of penance provides society.

My mother tongue is Japanese and when I compare English with Japanese, I think English is more logical and objective. For example, when we speak Japanese, we don't have to say a subject so usually we just guess that what a speaker wants to say. So when I speak English, I feel like I recognize and tell say things more directly and clearly.

I think we can learn our way of thinking, culture, values and so on through learning other languages. The more languages we speak, the more we can broaden our minds.

Chikako Kinoshita

- I'm not sure what you mean here-
...we can learn our way of thinking, ...
Do you mean - we can learn more about our own way? Or we can teach/share our way of thinking?

Thank you, Chikako. Neatly put. I like hearing about your perspective as a Japanese speaker. It has surprised me actually, because I've never thought of English as being that objective or logical! In fact, I thought that Japanese was more like this!

1. This address is very broad, you would either direct it to a specific person or keep it open - Sir/Madam
2. - I got enough points - I have enough - is more formal and appropriate. You could also use I have got.
3. This sentence is a bit muddled.
If you have any further questions or need further information/to contact me, please get in contact/don't hesitate to get in contact.

Harry Potter
1. Read Chapter 7 - The Sorting Hat. Read it once through without stopping (if you need to highlight new words to come back to)
2. Make a list of useful words that you learned from the chapter.
Think critically about it, it's probably useful to learn "ruff" as it's repeated and an important part of the description of the character Nearly Headless Nick.
But perhaps "bowlers" is only mentioned in the song and doesn't add anything in particular to the story.
3. Write a description of the Hogwarts Houses based on the information given at the start of the chapter (using your own words).
4. How are characters introduced in this chapter? What is our first impression of them? How does J.K. Rowling create these impressions? How does she use language?

Enjoy and have a great weekend!
