Read the letter from Albert Einstien to Franklin D. Roosevelt and determine whether or not you think this letter determined the decision of the United States to take action against Japan during World War II. Explain why or why not. Your answer must be 1-2 paragraphs long. If you finish you, you can RESPECTFULLY counter another person's argument on the opposing side.

I think this letter did influence the decision to take action on Japan because in my opinion, the letter was very convincing. It explained a lot about all of the scientists new discoveries, and how building the atomic bomb would benefit the U.S. Albert Einstein made a very good point while writing this letter. I also think the letter influenced the decision to drop an atomic bomb on Japan because of what our studies weekly article said. "When Einstein heard of the breakthrough, he wrote a letter to U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and encouraged him to explore this new science. Perhaps a bomb could be made...Roosevelt agreed and turned loose 100,000 scientists, mathematicians, and engineers to build an atomic bomb." This evidence makes it clear to me that Einstein's lette had a big influence on the bombing of Japan.

I do think this determined the decision to whether or not they should take action against Japan because Albert Einstein basically eliminates the options to just two. Now all President Roosevelt has to do is either pick A or B.

Choice A is, "To approach Government Departments, keep them informed of the further development, and put forward recommendations for Government action, giving particular attention to the problem of securing a supply of uranium ore for the United States. Choice B is, " to speed up the experimental work, which is at present being carried on within the limits of the budgets of University laboratories, by providing funds, if such funds be required, through his contacts with private persons who are willing to make contributions for this cause, and perhaps also by obtaining cooperation of industrial laboratories which have necessary equipment." So after reading these two choices all President Roosevelt has to do is pick one and move on. In my mind, this process is pretty simple. This explains why it can be easily determined at this point.

Yes, I think it did help determine the decision to take action becuase of E. Fermi and L. Szilard found out that they could use uranium and plutonium could be used to make power and bombs. This would help us win the war against Japan and save many more lives. The letter states,"This new phenomenon would also lead to the construction of bombs, and it is conceivable though much less certain that extremely powerful bombs of this type may thus be constructed. A single bomb of this type, carried by boat and exploded in a port, might very well destroy the whole port together with some of the surrounding territory." This means that we could have a very high chance of wining with this new weapon we had on our side. In sum, I know that this letter helped make the decision to take action against Japan.

I do as well believe that because of this very valuable and important letter that the U.S. finally figured out how to make atom bombs. Based on the text, " I believe therefore that it is my duty to bring to your attention the following facts and recommendations." and "Some recent work by E. Fermi and L. Szilard, which has been communicated to me in manuscript, leads me to expect that the element uranium may be turned into a new and important source of energy in the immediate future." this shows that Einstein had to bring all of this important information to Roosevelts attention. In conclusion, I hope this article opened your mind to a whole bunch of new thoughts on this topic and about how Einstein played a important role in the creation of atomic bombs. Hailey.R

Roosevelt had many options but finally, Einstein helped him out and gave him two.

Also, Einstein helped the president up to date with what has happened which in my opinion helped the president make a decision to act on Japan and drop the bombs.

Einstein wanted this war to end with Japan, so he helped out the president. Although, he didn't take action in the first place, he did eventually and the first shot wasn't good enough so they dropped a second bomb on the city of Nagasaki, which finally ended that part of the war with Japan. On the first dropping of a bomb on the city of Hiroshima didn't work Japan still did not give up. They kept going even after how many lives were lost and how many homes were lost. JAPAN WANTED TO WIN SO THEY DID NOT GIVE UP. Finally, the second bombed made them give up and end the war.

To start with, yes, I think that they should've dropped the bombs because we would've let Japan get away with ruining Pearl Harbor. Next, if they had never dropped the bombs who knows where and what we would be doing today. We would also be wondering if Japan was our leader, and the United states might have never succeeded. Last but not least, if we never dropped the bombs on Japan and Cuba they could've gotten the opportunity to take over other parts of the world and nobody would want to interfere. In sum, dropping the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki was a great idea and really put the United states in there place.

Then they would likely run out very quickly. Like Germany during WW1 they could have had a multitude of small bombings on military to drive down their arsenal and then the would have ended with much less Japanese deaths.
Finishing this off, the Japanese also have a lot of natural disasters which would drive their men´s spirits down and maybe destroy military equipment. Including, the Japanese was trapped on all sides with America blocking all of the ocean and Asia and America´s allies blocking the land. So the Japanese would be trapped on all sides and if they tried to resist then we could keep weakening their military arsenal which would keep weakening them until they gave up.

From that America was able to prepare and make weapons just as powerful. In addition, Einstein told Roosevelt what you had to do to really make a atomic bomb and the effects of it. The text states, "...that it may be possible to set up a nuclear chain reaction in a large mass of uranium, by which vast amounts of power and large quantities of new radiumlike elements would be generated." This shows me that Einstein was saying what the bomb is made of and what it is capable of. Finally, this letter helped America take action against the Japanese because Japan wouldn't surrender. The letter doesn't say anything about actually having the need to drop the bomb. Einstein just mentioned their progress and the expenses. I am also pretty sure that Einstein did not want to drop this bomb. They created this project for emergency uses and they already had the emergency before they started the process. This did not influence it but it put progress into it. They needed it either way because they needed peace, they needed to make sure that other countries don't win the race and they get bombed instead. They needed it before the project started. They needed it before this message was written.

For example Japan pilots were going on suicide missions like driving their own plane into a U.S. ship. Once the U.S. was notified by Albert Einstein that they could produce a big enough bomb to stop Japan they started to produce that bomb.

The United States president would most likely do anything for American citizens to be safe and humble. Since Japan was very resistant to giving up, Japan could strike at any moment and it was the safest option to end it right then and there. The atomic bomb was a very deadly bomb the could wipe out whole cities and could scare countries such as Japan to surrender. This is why I think the letter helped determine the bombing.

It clearly says in the note that EInstein did a bunch of research to make sure that doing this was a good idea. He saw that uranium can let out large amounts of power and energy. All in all, Roosevelt hadn't thought about this idea until Einstein wrote to him about it, so how could EInstein not have influenced him?

I do think this letter influenced the government to take immediate action on the subject and deal with it. It brings to attention the power of the bomb which is important concerning the destruction caused by the bomb. Lastly, it shows that the Germans were getting ahead in development which would mean that if continued could cause immediate destruction to many important assets and war bases.

Yes I think it did determine the decision to take action against Japan. I think this because Japan bombed us first. We just found out a way to make a more powerful bomb that packed a super deathifying punch. Also, Japan wouldn't surrender and America was through with the war we just weren't going to surrender to end it. This is why it did determine the decision to take action against Japan.

No, I do not think it determined the decision to take action against Japan because it never really says that it needed to be dropped on Japan. They discovered this bomb they could create by separating atoms. Einstein never intended to use it as a weapon. President Kennedy found this powerful bomb and decided to use it as a weapon. In Summary, the bomb did not determine the decision against Japan.

No I don't think it determined to take action against Japan. I say this because the letter that Einstein wrote to Roosevelt only mentioned the creation of the bomb not the bombing on the Japan cities.
