One of the most well known Mexican holidays, is the famous Cinco De Mayo (the fifth of May). This is the celebration of Mexico's victory over the Second French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. This tradition is celebrated with festivals, and maybe people dress up. Another holiday is dia de los muertos, which is a day of remembrance for the dead. This is celebrated by using face paint, and making a table with photos of loved ones who have sadly passed away. There are also huge parades, and many festivals.

Flavor Of Holidays (both food and music!)

Mexico is well known for their flavorful food. When most people think of Mexican food, items like tacos, quesadillas, and even burritos come to mind. During these holidays, however, more foods seem to be on your plate! Popular cinco de mayo foods include Tamales, Carnitas, the beverage horchata, and my favorite, barbacoa! However, music also comes to play during these holidays. The mariachi bands and techo bandas are a hot take during most of these holidays.

Conclusion and Cultural Comparison

As a Mexican American, living in the United States, experiencing both cultures is a wonderful experience. If I had to pick one to keep forever, I would choose Mexican culture. Seeing the family get together after long weeks, having fun and dancing, eating yummy, filling foods, and listening to loud music, it’s an amazing experience that is hard to compete with. I do love to celebrate American holidays such as the Fourth of July (Independence Day), but eating tamales on Christmas rather than having another turkey Christmas, is more enjoyable. Call me bias, but Mexico on top!
