The unit initially included only a brief one-page history about space, but the students became extremely curious and eager to learn more. They asked several thought-provoking questions such as how telescopes were invented, what happened to Kalpana Chawla and why, and how rockets actually work. We also discussed Sunita Williams and her recent journey to space, along with India’s Chandrayaan 1, 2, and 3 missions.

Seeing their curiosity and enthusiasm, I assigned different research topics to the students. The very next day, they came to class with amazing knowledge and in-depth research findings. I was especially impressed when two students even made paper rockets and attempted to explain how rockets function. Although their models were not perfect, I truly appreciated their creativity, effort, and confidence in presenting their ideas.

This activity encouraged students to explore beyond the textbook, ask questions, think critically, and actively participate in their own learning process. That is how I incorporated the active learning approach in my classroom.

2. Writing a letter to a friend in a fictional situation that a person is likely to encounter in real life
