The patterns I chose had to do with my theme: Growing up. I picked patterns that were meant to represent different aspects and stages of my experience of growing up and the pain that it brings. 
  • Bubbles: This pattern represents being a child. Free in the world to do whatever I wanted and be playful. Even though there are rich and challenging emotions and experiences as a child, life is generally pretty simple.
  • Grid-like pattern: The grid-like pattern is actually a sport court that I have in my yard. This represents the next stage of childhood for me. Still very playful like the bubbles, but represents the challenges of an older child. Friends and the challenges that come with lots of friends. 
  • Tires: The tire marks/tracks represent the breaking into adolescents and the stage of begging driving and getting my license. With this stage came more responsibilities for me, getting a Job, running errands for my parents, driving my younger brother, etc. 
  • Dorm Wall: The grid represents the cinder block wall of my dorm, freshman year. I liked this pattern for representing young adulthood because it is very rigid. For me, going to college was actually not the typical experience of freedom from home and parents, it was actually very confining and limiting for me. 
  • Shattered glass/Cracking tiles: the shattering/cracking isn't really representational of a time as much of a precursor to the next pattern. It represents how my experience and life as I knew it kind of cracked and shattered from around me. 
  • Cancer Cells: The final pattern is representational of the stage I am currently in as well as all future stages. My sibling's cancer came back, a lot more aggressive than when he previously had it, and he subsequently moved back home for treatment. It shifted my role in my family as well as my outlook on lots of things, including growing up and life itself. This pattern represents the concept of unexpectedness and the fact that no amount of plans or expectations will determine exactly how your life will go. 
Compositionally I did change how the tires got woven back into the surrounding patterns as well as the extent of the cracking. Because these patterns were a little bit more"malleable" I was able to do so without affecting how they appeared on the page and in the design.
