         <title>Preserving the Primates </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>   There has been an alarming decrease in the population of non-human primates in the wild. This population decrease is mostly due to habitat destruction, the illegal pet trade, and the desire for primate body parts such as gorilla hands. Although some of the these causes are already illegal, the most serious and major isn't. Habitat destruction and deforestation are the biggest causes in the rapid decrease in wild primates. Although there are some laws (depending on the country)  to help stop some of this but it isn't enough.¨Taking just one example: because of <a href="http://www.earthtimes.org/encyclopaedia/environmental-issues/rainforests/">rainforest</a> habitat loss it is estimated that at least 120 out of the 620 living primate species (apes, monkeys, lemurs and others) will be extinct within the next 10 to 20 years. ¨-Earthtimes.org. More places around the world need to be designated as national forests and be more protected. <br>    Although zoos do not have a large effect on the population of wild primates it is questionable how they effect the individual animals they keep. I love going to the zoo and would love to believe that the animals are as happy to be there as the viewers, but sadly this is not always the case. Some zoos do provide the animals with both great habitats and great care, but others not so much. Many zoos have enclosures for the primates that are much too small, or just not good enough. Most primates are very smart and need a large enclosure full of things from their natural habitats such as branches, and others of the same species because they are also social animals. <br> Although there efforts to save non-human primates in the wild, it is not enough and the numbers are still decreasing. I do believe that primates should be allowed in captivity such as zoos but there needs to be more regulations and inspections.</div>]]></description>
