The most challenging part was completing the Comparative Study. While we did focus on it a lot and were given many opportunities to receive feedback from Baba Sam, our classmates, and have class days to work on specific aspects of it, I still struggled to learn the rubric and understand what exactly the IB people were looking for. I believe if I had spent more time in the beginning trying to fully understand what was being asked of me, I would have done a better job.

The Process Portfolio was the most challenging part of my DP art experience because it was very rushed and I do not feel confident in my submission. I was able to get a lot of feedback on both the comparative study and Exhibition but there was not much room for that for the Process Portfolio.

After each artwork that you create, put together one process slide so that it is easier to remember your process and thoughts at the end of the year.

The most challenging part was time management in general for the comparative study and the process portfolio. Because they both require a lot of time, I found myself rushing so I could get feedback and in general turning it in on time. It was also difficult to condense everything to just the most important information due to the slide limit.

This past year I started creating artwork that I truly enjoyed creating instead of trying to create art that felt forced. This caused me to find my own art style and want to continue to expand on it.

Take a lot of process pictures while working

Work on process portfolio at least a bit while working on art piece
Place exhibition texts and images in one slideshow to make it easier to find
Try to have a concrete theme for your art pieces before starting
Explore different mediums(2D,3D, photography and digital) so you can add them to the process portfolio

The three biggest pieces of advice I have for the juniors are to plan out everything way in advance, to understand and grasp the rubric, and to persevere.

For the first advice, managing your time is crucial for doing well in artmaking and writing. As you get closer to the end, your motivation to do well may fade. If you're faced with senioritis, it will help a lot if you've already done the majority of the work beforehand. I recommend not putting your process portfolio to the side and updating it as you move along in the class. Document everything in there, thoughts, feedback, even things you may think aren't important at that moment, that way when you are at the last stretch, you're prepared and will have all the information you need already.

Secondly, understanding and grasping the rubric is very important. Once you understand what is being asked, it makes it a lot easier to complete each assignment. Simply reading the rubric isn't enough; you would probably miss crucial points you have to do, and when given feedback, you may not know how to apply it correctly. I suggest spending time re-reading the rubric and asking many questions about it to uncover what each benchmark means and how you can achieve it.

Finally, don't give up. It's going to be hard at times, you'll get frustrated, confused, and feel a little hopeless. But even during those moments, don't forget you have people supporting you. Push through, and when you reach the end, you'll look back and know that you tried your best and gave it your all. Doing the work even when you don't want to will pay off; just believe in yourself.

It's going to be a rollercoaster of emotions, at times you'll feel sad and at other times you'll be happy. Never forget that you are all in this together, and it's okay to lean on each other for support as well as learn from them. Look after yourselves, don't neglect your sleep or meals to get art done if you don't have to (managing your time well can achieve this). And finally, have fun! Your exhibition would be unforgettable, and when you finish everything, you will be super relieved. Good luck, and keep making art!

Two of the most challenging things for me were time management, and artistic technique. Managing my time when making artworks was difficult because I didn't want to make art while on a time limit. While I had creative ideas, my artworks very rarely reflected that due to my lack of experience.

My advice for juniors would be to manage your time well. While things are all introduced early on it doesn’t hit you how much you actually have to do until the last two months of school and by then you’ll have a real bad case of senioritious. Just manage your time well and you’ll be okay

I learned a lot about how to put people in front of work. I tried to place more value on you as people than on your value as a student. In doing so I think I got to see the value of getting to know and understand you as people regardless of your progress as a student. Know what medium you are strong in, but don't let that prevent you from exploring other mediums. I cannot stress enough, especially for IB HL art students BE OPEN MINDED and ADAPTABLE! It's okay if you are unsure about the medium to pursue; that's even better because it forces you to explore more mediums. I wouldn't have discovered my niche in cardboard sculpture had I not been open-minded to try new mediums. The funny thing is that when I walked into HL Art in my junior year, I was so sure about pursuing oil painting. It was the only thing I wanted to work on for the 2 years, but as I explored and gave new things a try, I found something I was even more passionate about. IT'S OKAY IF YOUR PLAN DERAIL A LITTLE. It's truly not the end of the world. I mean heck, I went from painting to freaking cardboard sculpture! How out of the world is that! And this was never planned!

Create art during the summer!! So you can explore art to you full capacity rather then rushing your work for an assignment. Being open minded to new mediums, techniques and perspectives. Let the environment and people around you inspire you to create and strengthen your art.

Sure, the process portfolio and comparative study was no easy task; it was for sure a challenge, and I can go on and on abt the different aspects abt it, but truly, there were a LOT of guidance and resources and, most importantly, your peers. It's really up to you whether you use those resources to your benefit. For me, the biggest challenge was figuring out who I am as an artist and how I could intertwine my values into my work.

I have a love for lino and digital art. Although you think art is good it isn't it'll get better later though. Trying different mediums can help you discover a new sense of self. Always be open to new things and feedback. Even though things may go wrong sometimes the result of it will come out better than you think.

do not procrastinate! Been there done that. You don't want to do it. Try to make a plan outside of school to practice your work.
Take criticism but don't take it to heart. Criticism and feedback is meant to help you improve not to attack you.
Be open to try new things sometimes it can change your way of art completely. It happened to me.
Think about ideas for art early on. What set me back the most was trying to think of my next piece after one was done. Try to write down ideas and run them by someone else.
You will not be good at everything. It's okay to not be good at all the mediums you will be practicing as long as you are learning in the process you are still an artist.
MAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF! you will get overwhelmed with all the things happening in your classes and art class too. So try to make time for the things you love and unwind that way.
TAKE PHOTOS! you may not think it is relevant at the moment but try to build a habit of taking photos it will help you in the long run.
Enjoy the art you make and be proud of your process. Even the little wins, a win is a win.
I don't know what else to tell you but just try, manage your time, be creative, be open, help others, have fun, this is class is great as much as it is stressful.

My challenges most definitely were time management. However, I was lucky to pull through last minute. Ask other teachers for help with the Comparative Study and Process Portfolio. If Ms.Mckay is still here ask her for help.She is really good at art writing. Also, don't bombard her either, don't take her kindness for granted.

Please PLEASE start the comparative study as early as you can because procrastinating it was easily my biggest mistake.
Make sure to record your process throughout ALL of your pieces so the final steps of senior year are easy.
Build a good relationship with your art teacher and learn how to take constructive criticism
