Julius Caesar. Cleopatra was in a relationship with Caesar until his death. She allegedly bore his child, who she named Caesarion, but Julius never claimed him as his own.

In the aftermath of Caesar's death Romans were torn. Mark Antony was one of Caesars top generals so he wanted to take control. However Octavian, named Caesars heir also wanted the throne. Mark Antony wanted an alliance with cleopatra. They started a relationship, after, as the story goes, she met him on a decked out barge dressed like the Egyptian goddess Isis. She had a set of twins, one girl and one boy with mark Antony. Mark Antony committed suicide upon hearing cleopatra was dead, however she was not and he died in her arms. This was a few months after their forces were defeated by Octavian at the battle of Actium.

As a child she grew up in a marble palace in the city of Alexandria. Her rooms overlooked the famous lighthouse and she had servants to do practically anything for her. She went to school with very little exceptions and studied in the library of Alexandria.

The Battle of Actium was the clash of the combined forces of Cleopatra and Mark Antony against Octavian's forces. Cleopatra ended up fleeing the battle with mark Antony following behind. The rest of their forces surrendered

Cleopatra's sister born in 63 BCE. She ended taking control of the Egyptian army and fighting Caesar's forces. She lost and was paraded in the triumph. She ran away to a Temple dedicated to Artemis in Asia minor were she was killed by Mark Antony because of Cleopatra's urging.

Mark Antony was told that Cleopatra had died so he self removed himself with his own sword. This information however, was untrue. He was taken to Cleopatra and died in her arms.

After Mark Antony died Cleopatra was quick to follow. With Octavian and his forces at the gates of Alexandria she thought that the only option was suicide to avoid public humiliation such as her sister had faced. The story goes that she shut herself away in her mausoleum and self-removed by allowing a snake to bite her after her two maids, Iras and Charmion. However no one is sure of exactly how Cleopatra died, though the story known most broadly is that of the Asp biting her. Octavian found her lying on a golden couch.

I want to portray her a a sort of a seductress. I think that being a woman in this time period means that she needs to take every advantage possible so she can thrive as a ruler. She did seduce Mark Antony on the barge when they first met, but it was for political gain.

Ruthless

Cleopatra will be portrayed as Ruthless. This time period is very different from now. War's were much more common and were very brutal. Her brother overthrew her because of advisors and she had to flee. Her lover died while she was in Rome and people had already not liked her. She quite literally kills herself because she she did not want to face humiliation. She has Mark Antony kill her sister. She does what she needs to do

Devoted

Cleopatra was very devoted to her country and her children. Though her relationship with Mark Antony she was able to gift her children great swaths of land, which in turn boosted Egypt. While near the end she abandoned Egypt to Octavian, she was the only ruler in the Ptolemaic dynasty who bothered to learn Egyptian. But even in her death she truly committed to it seeing as Octavian found her dead, in a mausoleum built for her, rushed after her loss during the Battle Of Actium.

Manipulative

I don't think this is a bad trait, but an essential trait for a ruler to have. It allows much to be accomplished and done. Through her relationship with Caesar, she was able to have his troops battle for her so she could regain her throne from her brother and corrupt advisors. Her relationship with Mark Antony allowed her to gain land for Egypt and restore it to some of her former glory.

Smart

Cleopatra was undeniable smart. As a ruler she had to be. She managed to grow Egypt and stop her sister from taking over, and also her brother. At the end she was the one who took her life, not one of her enemies.

Ptolemaic Dynasty

Cleopatra was born into the Ptolemaic dynasty, the last dynasty of Ancient Egypt. Ptolemy I was one of Alexander the Great's generals, and when he died became the ruler of Egypt, one of the many places that had come under Alexander the Great's rule. There were a few things that happened before the official start of the dynasty, which is about 305 BCE. Throughout the dynasty, sibling marrying each other was not uncommon, but in fact a norm.

Co-Rulers

Cleopatra co-ruled with two of her brothers. The first one, Ptolemy XIII was about 8 years younger than her when they took the throne. She was 18 and their father had just died. This was in 51 BCE. It is presumed that they got married soon after. She was forced to flee Egypt soon after 50 BCE. She went to Syria and raised an army, then she came back in 48 BCE and faced her brother. She then met Caesar and his forces helped to restore her to the throne. Ptolemy ended up drowning in the Nile running from Caesar's forces. Cleopatra then married her brother Ptolemy XIV. He died in 44 BCE soon after she returned from Rome.

Expansion

Cleopatra expanded Egypt to some of its former glory, glory that had started to fade with loss of land and numerous civil wars. Mark Antony bestowed some land from the Roman Empire to Cleopatra's children, 2 of which were his. This expanded Egypt, regaining some of the land they had lost.

Legacy

Overall she gained land for Egypt before committing self-removal. She was the final ruler in the Ptolemaic Dynasty, and arguably the end of the Prominent Egyptian Empire. Both of her son's ended up being killed after her death. Egypt was taken over by Octavian, the Library was burned by Caesar before Cleopatra's death, and the Lighthouse was destroyed by earthquakes. Her daughter Cleopatra Selene, did survive, and became some what prominent in the Roman Empire.
