Before the Gulf war started, Iraq was in a war with Iran and the United States supplied Iraq with weapons and resources in their support for Iraq. This backfired on the a United States as a dictator came to rise in Iraq.

Ceasefire (April 11 1991)

After the Gulf war There was a ceasefire declared on April 11 1991 the united nations imposed strict sanctions on Iraq to dismantle weapons of mass disruption (WMD)

No Fly Zones (April 1991)

Following the Gulf War the United States, United Kingdom and France established no fly zones in northern and southern Iraq. This was to protect the ethnic Kurdish minority in northern Iraq and Shiite Muslims in the South.

Iraq compensation demand (July of 1990)

In July of 1990 Iraq demanded $10 billion in compensation for over producing oil cross borders and breaking OPEC trading regulations. Kuwait responded by offering just $500 million. The war officially started when Iraq decided to fully invade Kuwait for their oil in hopes to pay back their war debts.

Saddam Hussein Comes to Power (1979)

Saddam Hussein came to power after former leader Al-bakr resigned. Al-Bakr was the president of Iraq from 1968-1979. His political reforms weren’t as successful as this led to the rise of former leader Saddam Hussein.

Operation Desert Shield (August 1990-January 1991)

The Operation Dessert Shield was The response to Iraqs invasion of Kuwait. The United States and Allies deployed troops to Saudi Arabia to protect it from potential Iraqi aggression and prepare for the liberation of Kuwait.

There where over 100,000 deaths in the gulf war and 5 million displaced people. It caused over 200 billion in property damage. This was the most devastating war in the Middle East since World War 1.

Operation Desert Storm (January 1991-February 1991) Primary Source

As Operation Desert Shield came to an end it soon became operation desert storm. Operation desert storm is well known for being the largest air campaign since conflicts in South East Asia. More than 40 allied countries flew over 18,000 missions and as many as 88,500 tons of bombs were dropped.

This picture was taken in 2005 (4 years after the war) and is a photo of someone finding out their relative has passed due to being caught in the cross fire. Many innocent lives were lost due to being caught in cross fire or even being targeted by the Iraqi.

Kuwait oil rigs February- November 1991

Between February and November 1991 Iraqi armed forces ignited oil well fires producing dense clouds of soot liquid and gases. This caused health effects including very bad air quality causing respiratory issues for soldiers. Iraq set Oil on fire to have a military advantage the intense smoke would inhibit coalition offensive air strikes and could screen Iraq’s military movements.
