China was the first nation to invent paper. Before its invention, words were written on various natural materials by ancient peoples-on grass stalks by the Egyptians, on earthen plates by the Mesopotamians, on tree leaves by the Indians, on sheepskin by the Europeans and strangest of all, even inscribed on bamboo or wooden strips, tortoise shells or shoulder blades of an ox by the early Chinese. Later, inspired by the process of silk reeling, the people in ancient China succeeded in first making a kind of paper called "bo" out of silk. But its production was very expensive due to the scarcity of materials. In the early days of the 2nd century, a court official named Cai Lun produced a new kind of paper from bark, rags, wheat stalks and other materials. It was relatively cheap, light, thin, durable and more suitable for brush writing. At the beginning of the 3rd century, the paper making process first spread to Korea and then to Japan. It reached the Arab world in the Tang Dynasty, and Europe in the 12th century. In the16th century, it went to America by way of Europe and then gradually spread all over the world.

Before paper was invented, Qin Shihuang, the first emperor in Chinese history, had to go over 120 kilos of official documents written on bamboo or wooden strips. A paper map in Western Han Dynasty, unearthed in Tianshui, Gansu Province, in 1986

a lost civilization discovered in Sichuan province. This Bronze Age culture, predating the established dynasties, possessed unique bronze artifacts, including incredibly tall statues, masks with exaggerated features, and other objects with no parallels in other Chinese cultures. The sheer scale and artistry of the artifacts ,along with the lack of written records, make it a compelling mystery and a significant departure from the more familiar narrative of Chinese history.

BEIJING: When I grew up as a kid, both in the Washington DC area and Dallas, TX USA, I learned the basics of Chinese history. I remember learning about the ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius; there were imperial dynasties, such as the Song, Tang, Ming and so on.

We were taught about the Great Wall of China, Beijing is the capital city and it’s the world’s most populous nation. We were also informed that ancient Chinese inventors and scientists were very innovative as they created paper, fireworks, gunpowder, and so much more.

We took an art class to learn the history of Asian art, which included Chinese art. We had some understanding on the unique architectural designs of classical Chinese buildings.

But what did we not learn in schools about China? Looking back, we were young students and I’m 45 year-old so when I was a child, the teachers on Elementary school were not so open about explaining the scandals of imperial dynasties.

They described the rise and fall of dynasties more from a vague description. They would say empires inevitably rise and fall and that includes Chinese imperial dynasties.

After graduating from college, I moved to Seoul, South Korea from 2001 to 2007. I had taken one or two courses as a college student that was connected to Chinese history but nothing extraordinary that would make me an expert.

I didn’t start learning more in-depth about Chinese history until I moved to South Korea. I had begun my research reading large books on the history of China.

That’s when I discovered the Chinese emperors were living in luxury, had concubines and there was rampant corruption among the eunuchs and imperial officials. The rise and fall of dynasties followed similar patterns.

A dynasty would build a strong China, the descendants who became emperors later on would get corrupted and turn soft. A new group would rebel and overthrow the standing dynasty but generations later the emperors from the new dynasty would be corrupt and weak, which set off another cycle of dynastic decay.

In many instances, Chinese emperors would enjoy their pleasures more so than their responsibilities as leaders of a nation. When reading Chinese history, I would read about emperors who drank too much, womanizers and allowed their officials to plunder the citizens.

Hence, China historians would make reference to a “Mandate on Heaven,” which infers that the gods would display their angerat a Chinese emperor with a series of natural disasters, social upheavals, crime waves and the citizens or foreign forces would rise up against the emperor.

We should take note that natural disasters are just a fact of life and common everywhere. China has been frequently challenged by earthquakes, floods, droughts, blizzards, sandstorms and extreme temperatures.

But the government’s response to catastrophes can make or break them. The dynasties that collapsed had failed to deliver on recovery efforts, which led to animosity among its citizens.

To read about Chinese history is to learn about human nature, the good, bad and ugly. To start learning the basics, I recommend you read the book, ‘China New History,’ John K. Fairbank and Merle Goldman. The Amazon link is here:

https://www.amazon.com/China-New-History-Second-Enlarged/dp/0674018281

According to the book’s introduction:

”John King Fairbank was the West's doyen on China, and this book is the full and final expression of his lifelong engagement with this vast ancient civilization. It remains a masterwork without parallel. The distinguished historian Merle Goldman brings the book up to date, covering reforms in the post-Mao period through the early years of the twenty-first century, including the leadership of Hu Jintao. She also provides an epilogue discussing the changes in contemporary China that will shape the nation in the years to come.”

This book is a good start to capture a more comprehensive understanding of China’s grand history.

77.7K viewsView upvotesView 18 shares

1 of 24 answers

Chinese civilization is one of the world's oldest and most continuous civilizations, with a documented history stretching back over 3,000 years—and cultural roots that go back even further. It originated in the fertile plains of the Yellow River (Huang He) in northern China and evolved through multiple dynasties, innovations, and philosophies. Here's a broad overview:

1. Origins and Ancient Dynasties

Xia, Shang, and Zhou Dynasties (c. 2100–256 BCE)

Xia Dynasty (legendary): Considered semi-mythical, said to be the first dynasty founded by Yu the Great.

Shang Dynasty (c. 1600–1046 BCE): First historically confirmed dynasty. Known for bronze casting, oracle bones (early writing), and ancestor worship.

Zhou Dynasty (c. 1046–256 BCE): Introduced the Mandate of Heaven (divine right to rule), feudalism, and Confucian and Daoist ideas emerged during this time (especially the later Eastern Zhou period).

2. Imperial China

Qin Dynasty (221–206 BCE)

Unified China under Emperor Qin Shi Huang, standardized script, currency, and weights.

Began construction of the Great Wall.

Known for the Terracotta Army.

Han Dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE)

One of China's golden ages—science, technology (paper-making, seismographs), and trade (Silk Road) flourished.

Confucianism became state ideology.

Tang (618–907) and Song (960–1279) Dynasties

Tang: Cosmopolitan empire; poetry, painting, and Buddhism thrived.

Song: Technological and economic innovation—gunpowder, printing, compass, and advanced naval technology.

3. Mongol and Ming Eras

Yuan Dynasty (1271–1368)

Established by Kublai Khan, a Mongol. First foreign dynasty to rule all of China.

Marco Polo visited during this time.

Ming Dynasty (1368–1644)

Restoration of Han Chinese rule.

Famous for porcelain, maritime expeditions under Zheng He, and building the Forbidden City.

4. Qing Dynasty (1644–1912)

Ruled by the Manchus, the last imperial dynasty.

Expanded China's borders significantly.

Faced decline due to internal rebellion (Taiping, Boxer Rebellion), and external pressures (Opium Wars, Western imperialism).

5. Modern China

1912: End of dynastic rule; founding of the Republic of China under Sun Yat-sen.

1949: Founding of the People's Republic of China by Mao Zedong after civil war.

Modern China is now a global power, combining Communist Party rule with a dynamic capitalist economy.

6. Philosophical and Cultural Contributions

Confucianism: Focus on ethics, family, and hierarchy.

Daoism (Taoism): Harmony with nature, simplicity, and spiritual balance.

Buddhism: Introduced via Silk Road; influenced art, literature, and religion.

Art and Literature: Poetry (Li Bai, Du Fu), calligraphy, landscape painting, ceramics, and classical novels like Journey to the West.

7. Enduring Legacy

Chinese writing system has remained remarkably consistent over millennia.

Chinese calendar, medicine, martial arts, and cuisine are deeply influential.

Innovations such as papermaking, printing, gunpowder, and the compass had a global impact.

If you'd like, I can zoom into a specific period (like the Tang Dynasty), philosophy (like Confucianism), or cultural topic (like Chinese art or inventions).

It didn’t use electronics—just a bronze vessel with eight dragon heads holding balls. When an earthquake occurred, one of the balls would drop into the mouth of a toad below, showing the direction of the quake.

This invention shows how advanced ancient Chinese science and engineering were, even without modern tools.

The Chinese ideology has impacted our lives. The Confucian idea of “teaching without discrimination”.	Confucius believed that everyone, regardless of their social class, wealth, or other background characteristics, should have the opportunity to learn. This principals echoed modern concepts of inclusive education, where schools are expected to cater to the diverse needs of all students, including those with disabilities. Our school does this too! This principal that Confucius introduced is still impacting our lives. There are schemes like FAS, =DREAMS and KidStart in Singapore. These schemes provide help for the less advantage. These schemes may all have some relation to Confucius’ principal!

The use of paper for hygiene has been recorded in China in the 6th century AD, with specifically manufactured toilet paper being mass-produced in the 14th century. Modern commercial toilet paper originated in the 19th century, with a patent for roll-based dispensers being made in 1883. They were actually forced to make paper. Instructed by the Emperor of China to find an inexpensive and portable writing surface, the Chinese government official Ts'ai Lun produced and recorded a technique for the mass manufacture of paper during the Han Dynasty (206 BC to AD 220). Without toilet paper, how are people in these days going to survive. Especially the germaphobic! China was the first documented country to use toilet paper for sanitary reasons. WOW how amazing!

Ancient Chinese engineers built earthquake detectors over 1,800 years ago.

In 132 CE, Zhang Heng, a brilliant polymath of the Eastern Han dynasty, invented the world’s first known seismoscope—a device capable of detecting earthquakes from hundreds of miles away. It looked like a large bronze vessel with eight dragon heads, each holding a ball in its mouth. When an earthquake occurred, one of the dragon mouths would release its ball into the mouth of a corresponding toad below, indicating the direction of the tremor—even if the quake wasn’t felt locally.

This remarkable invention predates modern seismographs by over a millennium and shows just how advanced early Chinese science and engineering were.

About 5000 years ago, she found a cocoon fell into a cup of hot tea while she was drinking it. But it was revealed that the hot tea dissolved as the sticky substance holding the cocoon together. The cocoon began to unravel into a long thread. The thread was so long that it stretched across the palace grounds from the garden to the courtyard. Chi Zing Li thought that the thread could be woven into a wonderful fabric. She instructed her ladies to gather more cocoons. They put the cocoons into hot water and made threads from the fibres.

Empress Chi the wove the threads into a fine piece of cloth. She embroidered the cloth and made it into a robe for the emperor and it marked as the beginning of the Chinese silk industry.

In the past, silk was used to make clothes for royalty and important officials. Scholars were also allowed to wear silk. Emperors gave silk as gifts and rewards.

As of today, besides clothing and bedding, silk is also used for

medical purposes.
