The cover choice for Vogue Magazine was quite a bold and daring choice. It represents our future, whilst showcasing power, reign and strength. We rarely see black women from various cultures, with darker skin tones bracing the cover of the worlds most popular magazines.

However, after watching news reports based on the cover of Vogue it seems as if though not many people were impressed by it. The news reporter labelled it as "intentional" , which obviously means she acknowledges the fact that they are black women from different countries and cultures. But why feel the need to have it done now? It is because the question was addressed after black, light skinned models and celebrities were seen as "more beautiful" and "suitable" to feature on magazine covers?

Why does it seem as if the skin tone of these models were made to appear darker? Why do photographers specifically want them to appear darker?

If you're not black enough, you're too black. I think the same goes for Hispanic people, if you're not light enough with sleek hair, you're not "Latina" enough.

Yes my collection does. I love designing garments and clothing for mainly women, and my theme for my collection is quite provocative and sexy. I want to showcase this on different body types of females and silhouettes .

Definitely a strawberry. Strawberries are seen as playful and " sensual fruit" often used in movies and music videos to portray "passion".

From the age of 21 and up.

Its on a pc.

Definitely Instagram. I think the audience and target market is much bigger on Instagram, than other social media platforms. I also feel as if though the engagement on Instagram is better.

My collection is a meat-eater.

The evening to midnight. My collection is inspired by lingerie, and women normally wear lingerie after dark.

To be true to yourself. Beauty is from within and beauty can be seen amongst people from different races and various shapes, forms and sizes.

50 Shades of Grey. There are some sensual scenes throughout the movie showcasing scenes where the character Anna, wears lingerie. Lingerie is the main concept of my collection.

Euphoria. The series is based on teenagers who face daily challenges throughout their highs school year. Each individual facing their own demons, and battling with emotions they have no control over. As the series progresses, we also see them using their inner strength to fight their battles.

In week two of design class, we had to explain what we were going to do throughout our collection and how our collection resonates with our aesthetic, our personality and the reason for the concept chosen. 
It took me back to High school, when people would often assume that I was Hindu, or would ask me if I considered myself Indian or Coloured.
It ended with me questioning my own identity. 
Who was I? I mean ofcourse I knew who and what I was...but did I really fit in? 

Did I fit in more with the Cape Malay community than with the Indian?
Although.. I have to mention that the Indian community considered me more Indian, than Malay. 
This was something I often experienced whilst shopping with my Indian Father, instead of my mother ...who happened to be Cape Malay.
Still... I felt more drawn to Malay traditions and ancestry than I did to Indian.

I will be turning 28 years old this year, and I've decided to celebrate my Indian heritage a bit more. Well my collection is not only based on my cultural roots, but also about sexy appeal. I want women to feel sexy, empowered and dominant. We know that being a female in a "mans world" can be quite stressful and rather boring if you ask me. What a better way to portray this idea and concept through a collection? Women often feel insecure and ashamed of their bodies and also shy to express themselves in a empowering manner. We all know men love to take the lead, but I know every women has the "alpha female" in her waiting to be unleashed. You should do it for yourself. My concept started with the inspiration of Mendhi. Mendhi is apart of my culture and heritage. As seen above the patterns seen on the hands have now been used on different areas of the body. People now call it "Mendhi/Henna tattoo". 
You also get various designs of mendhi now which includes a lot of lace details and designs.
On Pinterest, whilst doing my research I came across really sexy designs using mendhi, which were done on female bodies.
I used this as my main source of inspiration to portray "sex appeal", as the designs covered the back or decolletage area of the body. This means that she is covered, yet the look remains "transparent" at the same time.

I do not really gravitate towards vibrant colours and patterns, and prefer more basic and neutral colour pallets which is quite minimalistic, yet chic.
You can be a show stopper in black. You can turn heads in something simple yet elegant. This is what I intend to showcase throughout my collection. I want to be different, bold and daring.
You will notice form, texture and space from the elements of design on my garments.

As mentioned mendhi can now be used for "body art" and not just restricted to the hands,arms and feet as before.
The design and detail used in mendhi patterns, will replicate lace motifs.
This will be used to cover up specific areas of the body, leaving the rest of the body "exposed" but sheer.
I also love using mendhi as my main concept, as it breaks away from the way it is and was used traditionally. I definitely wanted to create something different and unique.

The materials chosen for my collection are sheer and transparent. This was the obvious choice as mendhi is used as my concept, and mendhi covers the skin, still leaving it "transparent". 
This is the look I envisioned for my collection. I want the lace motifs to cover the private areas of the female body, yet leaving much to the imagination with the help of sheer fabrics such as soft Tulle for example.
I want the fabric to be fitted to the body, showcasing the silhouette of the body and the form.

I love that his fabrics are traditionally sourced, and he is true to himself. I also love that he has a specific routine or "disciplined order" mentioned in the video that he follows and sticks to regarding his style and aesthetic.

One of his key concepts as a designer is that he is not afraid to repeat styles and designs, which for me as an upcoming designer is really amazing. I love the idea behind creating garments and clothing that can be worn throughout seasons and if not trending at the moment, It will make its debut once again in the near future.

This was something I learnt working at Country Road. As a former sales assistant we were often taught about key items that worked for our business and brand, and why they worked for our business and brand. One important aspect was that those items were "Timeless" pieces and could be worn throughout all seasons, which customers loved. These were called our "KVL's".

I see this in Lukhanyo's work and that is why I feel he is one of many designers I am fascinated with.

I feel as if I am two minded about cover. Initially, I was inlove with the concept
portrayed and the bold statement it represented but after watching the video on
Youtube and the CNN report, now I felt a bit confused.
Did the cover represent what I thought it was representing? Or was it something I
wished it did? When we were asked to give feedback on opinions and views
expressed in class, my first reaction was Wow! This cover is beautiful. Finally we
beautiful black females dominating the fashion industry and runway.
Yes... I know... it’s not the first time we've seen black models brace the cover of
Vogue Magazine, but this one was different. These models were different from
the rest; everything about this cover was strikingly beautiful.
One aspect I wanted to highlight about black models on the covers of
international magazines, is that your rarely see dark skinned models. When I say
black, I am referring to light skinned models and artist'.
This has been going on for decades throughout the entertainment industry. Last
year I watched an interview on YouTube based on black female artist' in the music
industry. The interview showcased dark and light skinned, British female singers
and the obstacles they faced.
One of the singers, Leigh-Anne Pinnock describes how she is treated compared to
her white and light-skinned band members. Whilst she highlights this, she also
expresses concern over what dark skinned women in the industry has to deal
with. She obviously does not know the level of racism and insults dark-skinned
women have had to endure, but she sympathizes with them after learning how
they are treated.
The point I am trying to make is, we're used to seeing women like Beyoncé,
Mariah Carey and Rihanna on magazine covers, the "appropriate" choice for
movie roles and who are deemed beautiful with "glowwy", radiant and beautiful
skin tones.
So why is it shocking to see more than one dark-skinned model on the cover of
Vogue? Shouldn’t this be the norm? Shouldn’t we be used to seeing black models
from all over Africa, from different ethnicities and cultures?
One thing that stood out for me was when the CNN reporter mentioned the fact
that the cover choice felt "intentional". Obviously meaning she feels that it felt
forced. I totally understand why she would feel this way, as let’s be realistic... you
hardly see black, dark-skinned models on the cover of literally anything. If you're
"too dark" you're not seen as beautiful or "exotic" enough.
Again, these are YouTube interviews which were actually done by African
American men...and guess what? It’s the truth. They've told jokes about this,
made remarks and basically pointed out facts.
So my question is...could she be right...was the cover choice intentional, because
they obligated to have it done, or before someone else does it. I mean... I know
the intention of Edward Enninful was meant to have nothing but a powerful
influence... but then again…not many were delighted about this.
In addition to this I feel like the cover still resembles something really dynamic.
I really do not agree with making the models appear darker than their actual skin
tone, but maybe Edward Enninful wanted to create a bit of "positive
controversy"? Maybe this was the exposure he needed the cover to gain. If it is... I
think it was a risky yet brilliant move.
In one of the articles and interviews I learnt that some fashion photographers
actually prefer darkening the skin of black models. Why though? You're either too
"light-skinned" for certain roles and shoots or you're either too "dark". When will
these women ever be enough? Are we seriously going to continue with doing so?
I’m sure they assumed that the cover will not only bring awareness but a sense of
pleasure that evokes seeing beautiful black women from other ethnicities and
darker skin tones, amongst the black community. Let’s be realistic though, not
everyone was happy about this. I guess you can't please everyone, but I
understand the concern and importance of this.
You need to understand why people of a certain community, race or religion do
not feel comfortable or show contentment over certain things. Even though there
are cons, there are pros too...and I still feel as if the cover is really phenomenal.
Finally, I think the media needs to do a better job with how they portray people.
Especially people of colour. Stop stereotyping and separating people based on
skin colour, the texture of your hair and beauty. When will November covers like
Vogue stop surprising us? Again, dark-skin models should also be the norm. When
will see new faces... people we don’t know and haven’t heard of, but those who
are upcoming in the industry.
Like I mentioned before, I actually love the cover and I do admire Edward Enninful
for stepping out and breaking the same old boring "rules". It’s something daring
and courageous that has not been done before. I guess this will keep people
talking for years to come, which could be a good thing...especially for Edward.
As a designer I would love people to remember my collection and have my name
imprinted in their brains forever...so good for Edward.
My reasons for the things mentioned above are because as a designer you have to
be open minded. Yes... we know its so easy to fall in love with anything and
everything we see, but what does it symbolize? Is there a deeper meaning and
what are the results of this? Are people happy about what you're doing, or are
they offended? Like I said...I guess you can’t please everyone but you need to
think about the negative and positive impact it could have.
Also something negative could turn out to be positive in the process.
In conclusion... I have learnt so much from this topic and assignment. Not only by
reading the articles and watching YouTube videos, but also having discussions
with my fellow peers in class.
I loved hearing different views and opinions and this really expanded my own
vision and opinion I first had when I saw the cover of Vogue. It was nice knowing
that someone else didn’t like something you did, or they did not agree with
something you thought had a positive impact.
I realized that I needed to be more open minded and conscious by what others

Focuses on the the cultural history and aesthetic of exploring African culture and its purpose. It showcases the past and present lives and generations of black people throughout Africa and the world. This is portrayed through music, arts, movies and the fashion industry and it helps black people embrace their cultures and origins through Afrofuturism.

2) Intersectionality
Identifies differences of people. Examples of these could be race, age, sex, religion , cultures or even identifying ones sexuality.  It basically describes how human beings are divided into different categories or where they "belong", which refers to how people place themselves under different groups or categories. This is also where we learn about discrimination and oppression amongst people of different races, class and gender. An individual who stems from a wealthier family, will likely be categorized and treated better whether on school, university, workplace or even in life.. compared to someone who is from a middle to low class family due to certain privileges . The same applies to race and even religion.

3)Orientalism
Depicts aspects of the Eastern world, done by designers, writers and artists who are generally from the Western world.

4)Diaspora
Populations of people being removed from their own country or continent, e.g Africans being placed across various parts of the world due to slavery.

5)Dystopia
The opposite concept of Utopia, which means this place consists of suffering, violence and war.

6)Pan Africanism
To unite and strengthen bonds of those who are of African descent. This includes all tribes, cultures and ethnicities.

7)Identity Politics
To me this describes the views and opinions of others who think they know who and what you are. Some individuals are highly offended when you do not agree with them on what race or ethnic group you belong to according to them. This often leads to debates and arguments because they refuse to accept " your identity" and think you are either ashamed or ignorant for disagreeing with them.

8)Double Consciousness
Not really understanding or subjecting to a specific identity, as you are confused about who you due to multiple cultures, races and religions within your family or family history.

9)Science Fiction
Focuses on things fictionalized and imaginative concepts which generally refers to planets, space and aliens etc.

10)Queer
A term used by the LGBTQI+ community to identify themselves.

11)Feminism
Having equal rights and responsibilities as males, and having the freedom and opportunities to do most things males can and cannot do.

12)Culture
One of the terminologies which defines who I am. To me culture is extremely important as it was passed down from my forefathers and assists in my upbringing and traditions which i follow to this day.

13)Tradition
Tradition is an extremely important element in my life.It is something I love and truly value as it plays a vital role in my daily life. Everyday I practice traditional things or use certain terms which is loved and mandatory to myself and my family. Honestly.. I do not think I would be the women I am if I did not follow customs passed down to me from great grandparents and parents. Tradition has molded me into the person I am, and this is something I intend to pass on to my children as it plays a vital role in their futures.

14) Patriarchy
For me this term is defined by individuals and who have created this concept and "mindset" amongst eachother, well basically ourselves. Here we are "labelled" and defined by who we are, what we wear, our income, backgrounds and even where we live or come from. This classifies our status and worth within our circle of friends, colleagues and even the society we live in. It is basically "Maslows Hierachy of needs" in "human and worth" form.
