Ralph also does not apologise and brushes the matter off which can be shown from page 21 to 22. However, Piggy was very insistent by saying “I was with him when he got the conch”. Piggy clearly is unable to read the situation where he is completely uninvited yet he still wants to tag along. ‘I was with him when i found the conch. I was with him before anybody else.” His response to Jack shows how adamant he was about following them despite being flatly rejected and the fact that Jack and Ralph were already declared the “leaders” of the group. In addition he “hung bumbling behind them” which shows how persistent he was about tagging along with them.

p42. “‘I got the conch’, said Piggy indignantly. ‘You let me speak’” which shows how Piggy thinks that the conch is really the one that gives one authority. This can be shown from the lines, “ We can’t have everybody talking at once. We’ll have to have a ‘ Hands up’ like school,’ He held the conch before his face and glanced round the mouth ‘ Then, I’ll give him the conch.’ This shows that Ralph wants everyone to be able to have a chance to voice their opinions and allow everyone to be civilised. At page 37, Ralph initiates everyone to make a fire so that ships passing by will notice their smoke. This can be seen from the lines, “ There’s another thing, We can help them find us. If a ship comes near the island they may not notice us, So we must make smoke on top of the mountain. We must make a fire,’ This shows that Ralph has survival instincts and trying his best to get the attention of other ships so that the boys will all be rescued.

Personally, I think that the best leader for the group is Ralph. Ralph is naturally gifted in the sense that leadership qualities come naturally to him. This can be seen when Ralph looked to Piggy for assistance when he was unsure of what to say however when Piggy did not end up helping him, he came up with what to say “all of a sudden”. This shows that Ralph is able to think on the spot even under pressure, proving that he would be a good leader when things get tough because he will be able to react quickly. The leadership quality also shows when Ralph immediately knew to set up a “conch system” where it would be like raising hands in school. This suggests that despite being unsure of the steps ahead and still needed the help from Piggy, he has his priorities set straight and knows what needs to be done for survival. Jack often resorts to violence and threats as a way to assert dominance. Jack is also insensitive as seen when he said that Simon was “always throwing a faint” even though Simon really was sick as seen when the “pallor on his face” recovered. Piggy would not be the best leader because he lacks confidence and would not be able to command the whole group of boys. The boys also do not respect him which would cause issues when trying to communicate important information. Piggy often tells Ralph what to do and what needs to be done, and therefore Piggy is a better follower.

In my opinion, I think that Piggy is the best leader for the boys. This is because he thinks rationally and has the intention to carry out the best possible solutions for optimal survival on the island. For instance, in Chapter 2, when the boys instantly follow Ralph to make a fire without any proper, solidified plan whatsoever, Piggy was clearly exasperated by their behaviour as their execution of the idea they had was totally messy and failed miserably. Thus, he got frustrated and tried to get them to think rationally as well, stating his reasons (pg 55 "How can you expect to be rescued if you don't put first things first and act proper?")

Piggy also obeys rules very closely, which can be seen from when he insists that the conch should be used. This shows how he follows structures that are put in place, and how he could help in civilisation and order on the island, which could help with the efficiency of their work.

As for Ralph, he is definitely confident and has a strong ability to engage people well. However, he always takes directions from Piggy and uses Piggy’s knowledge to lead others. Without Piggy, Ralph would not know the ways that he could lead the boys to and exactly what to do.

As for Jack, he is very self centred and entitled. From the beginning, in chapter 1, he was insistent on being chief just because he lead the choir. (“I ought to be chief”) His pride and ego get in the way of proper leadership that benefits everyone in the group. Jack strongly believes that he is always right and refuses to listen to or take in second opinions, which is detrimental to the connectivity of the group on the island. This could lead to additional conflicts that get in the way of survival on the island.

Jack is also extremely violent as his plans are somehow ALWAYS about killing and hunting animals, and he is uninterested in other needs that have to be fulfilled on the island.

In my opinion , I think Ralph is the most suitable to be a leader due to the traits he possesses. Firstly, he was the one that voiced out a “ conch “ system so that everyone would be able to voice out their own opinions and thoughts about certain situations and it would be the same as how they raised their hands up at school. However, I do agree that sometimes he does steal’s piggy’s ideas as his own and is not as knowledgeable as piggy. But piggy is timid and fragile, he follows people’s orders willingly and does not know how to stand his ground. However, a leader doesn’t have to necessarily be smart, Ralph takes initiative and is not afraid to voice out to the rest of the boys. And Ralph has shown that he is able to handle pressure well and think on the spot like when he thought about keeping a fire going on the top of island as to when the other ships sail by, they will notice it and it will increase their chances of rescue. He was able to think of this as his father was an army officer of a higher ranking. Thus, this also shows that he is able to adapt what he learnt in the past to situations like these. Compared to Jack, Jack relies solely on violence and savagery to gain respect from others, he wants others to respect him by fearing him which is not how a leader show work and all he wants to do in the island is to hunt and kill as to show his dominance. Hence, Ralph is the most suitable leader

I think Ralph is the best leader among the three. He is able to lead other boys naturally without thinking. This can be seen in "All at once he found he could talk fluently and explain what he had to say." (p. 30). The words "all at once" shows that Ralph did not plan out what he want ed to say, but it still flowed out naturally. This shows that his abilities to lead is very natural and it is as if leading the group is what he was born to do. He also able to cheer up the group when they are down. This is seen in "'... sooner or later, we shall be rescued.' He paused, with the point made. The assembly was lifted towards safety by his words." (p. 36). The group was worried that they would be stranded on the island forever, but Ralph shared about his father in the navy and promised to them that they would be rescued. This shows that Ralph is able to lift the spirits and change the mood, making him an excellent leader.

The reason why I did not think Jack is the best leader among the three is because he is very aggressive in trying to assert dominance. This can be seen in "Jack snatched from behind a sizable sheath-knife and clouted it into a trunk. The buzz rose and died away." The sentance "the buzz rose and died away" implies that the crowd was scared, then giving their attention to Jack before he hurts them or whatnot.

The reason why I did not think Piggy is the best leader among the three is because Piggy is not respected by the group of boys. This can be seen in "'You're talking too much,' said Jack Merridew. 'Shut up, Fatty.' // Laughter arose." (p.17) This shows that Jack did not respect Piggy at all, even when they just met, calling him 'Fatty' and not being polite at all. 'Laughter arose' shows that the group, like Jack, also did not respect Piggy, even though Piggy was super kind and respectful. This would not make him a good leader because to be a leader is to be respectful and respected. If a leader is not accepted, the leader would lead no one, as everyone would not listen to them.

I think Ralph would make the best choice for leader. In the world of politics and government, the president and prime minister should take care of their people. Ralph displays a great sense of responsibility in his leadership on the island. He also uses convincing way of speech in his speech about his father saving the schoolboys on the island. Ralph is flexible in his leadership skills and can adapt. Ralph also has charisma and he is confident which further enhances the schoolboys’ trust in him. Whereas for Piggy, Piggy is too stiff in his idea of leading. He’s too stuck in going with what schools have taught him and is unable to adapt to the new environment on the island. He also lacks confidence which is a crucial trait to be a leader. If a leader has no confidence in himself, there’s no reason for his followers to feel safe with him. As for Jack, he is too violent in his way of leading, using daggers as an intimidation and force. Despite how strong he seems in the book, how can his followers trust him not to turn onto them? Jack’s constant want to kill

We ought to have a meeting” As the children arrived on the beach, "Piggy moved among the crowd, asking names and frowning to remember them”. Eventhough he may have more negative traits it does not necessarily mean he is a bad leader, when being a leader you need people to listen to you and acknowledge you, different from Ralph, Jack just has a different way. He uses violence to scare or threaten the boys to listen to him, he might be threatening but it works the boys do listen to him, a leader is suppose to influence others and jack does especially as he leads his choir group. The choir group is loyal to Jack it can be seen when the bkys on the island were choosing who they want as chief and his choir group stuck and chose him this shows that they respect Jack and his methods in leadership works if his choir group chose to stick with him. Jack is also more effective and efficient as a leader because the boys on the island think Jack's view on leading them is more fun and charismatic than ralphs which makes the boys listen to him more since they were kids after all and all they wanted to do was play with no adults telling them what to do, Jack gives them the freedom but also uses their mentality and behaviour towards him to manipulate them and control them. Jack uses violence but he has no problem controlling his groups of hunters while Ralph can't control the boys when he was chief, many of them were just playing and not sticking to what Ralph has implemented. It is more effective to lead when the element of fear is induced to someone as they would just listen to you to protect themselves from getting hurt especially the ones with no power. Hence, Jack is a better leader as he can get people to listen to him and follow his orders without being rebelled against.
