The Estates General is the three different classes in French society. The first class is made up of the church officials, they have one vote, make up 1% of the population, own 10% of the land, and do not pay any taxes. The middle class is made up of nobles, they have one vote, make up 10% of the population, and also do not pay taxes. The third estate is made up of the commoners, they also have one vote, make up 89% of the population, and they pay all the taxes. This caused issues because the wealthy didn't have to pay taxes, there was limited land for the third estate since the first and second owned it all, and there was always 2 against 1 during the voting. The third estate changes to National Assembly, he third estate would meet and properly discuss things with the upper estates, representation based on population. The goal for the National Assembly was that the third estate would be able to get treated fairly, they wanted their proper representation. The first and second estate didn't like this because they did not want to pay for anything, they wanted everything basically handed to them. At the National Assembly the doors were locked. The third estate had to wait for a long time, while they were waiting they gathered near the tennis court and took the Tennis Court Oath. They promised to not separate until there was a constitution for them.

The Storming of Bastille happened in July, 1789 because the people were scared the National Assembly would dissolve and the commoners felt that their rights were being attacked by Louis XVI, so they tried to rise up against the soldiers at Bastille. They also freed political prisoners and got weapons from the armory. In October, 1789, women marched on the Palace of Versailles because of the price on bread and there was rumor that Marie Antionette was keeping all of the wheat. It was also the queens fault because she kept spending a lot of money on parties, self care, and luxuries instead of using it on the people. The Legislative government was a second attempt to govern this way. The idea was the King Louis XVI worked with the people, also the government tried to keep the Monarchy and people happy. This form of government failed because there was weak leadership and the country never had a government without a monarchy. The people did not know what to do because they never had someone ruling over them. Robespierre was the leader of the first republic and the Reign of Terror. The first republican supported the people rights, this also lead to the Reign of Terror. He pushed for what he thought was necessary to create the government he wanted.

The Directory was when the upper house accepts or rejects the laws while the lower house makes the laws. It struggled because it caused widespread corruption. Napoleon was a military genius and he graduated from the military academy at 16 years old. He also staged a Coup d'etat to overthrow the Directory Government in 1799. Napoleon made the Napoleon codes, simplified the laws for France, he eliminated Estate systems, the people and their class became equal, allowed freedom of religion, people of France could believe in God however they wanted to, restored centralized government to France, makes the education system better, boys and girls can learn about the world properly, improved the relationship with the pope, and sold the Louisiana Purchase to the U.S, made him look like he didn't care for France. Once he died he left his legacy. France dominated most of Europe, made his own rules of conquered nations, and made his brother the King of Spain. He also made the new feeling of national pride, believing your country can do no wrong.
