Malala Yousafzai was born on July 12, 1977 in Swat Valley, Mingora - Pakistan. Malala was named after a famous Afghani poet and warrior named Malalai of Maiwand who spoke out and was killed. Like most girls her age, she wanted to become a doctor or teacher but unlike most children she also wanted to become a politician to fix the Pakistan government and protect the people of Mingora. Malala's family was poor when she was growing up and Malala grew up living in her father's school which at the time was not very large and didn't have many pupils.

Malala lives with her two younger brothers, Atal and Kushal, her mother, and her father. Malala's father had a huge influence on her and encouraged her to speak up about what she believed in. Malala's father owned his own school which Malala and her brothers attended, he also wrote poetry, sometimes about love, but often about controversial topics such as honor killings (the killing of a relative, especially a girl or woman, who is perceived to have brought dishonor on the family) and women's rights.

When she was living in Swat Valley, Malala wrote a blog called " The Diary of a Pakistani Schoolgirl" which was where she wrote under the pen name of "Gul Makai" about life under Taliban rule for BBC news. Malala worked to give peace and opportunity to all. She also started the Malala fund which is a fund that helps to get children a quality education.

Malala faced many challenges - mostly because of the Taliban. Pakistan is under a dictatorship and many of the politicians and dictators were either murdered by the Taliban or are involved with them and many Taliban suicide bombers were sent to attack Swat Valley. When the Taliban took over they closed down many schools and made it illegal for girls to attend school. The biggest challenge Malala had faced was that she got shot in the head by the Taliban.

Some interesting information about Malala is that she had found out that she had won the Nobel Peace Prize during a chemistry lesson and decided that she would finish her school day before receiving the prize. Another interesting fact is that Malala wanted to be known as the girl who fought for education, not the girl who was shot by the Taliban. And finally Malala currently resides with her family in Birmingham, England.
