Self-Reliance

"Dad kept telling me that he loved me, that he never would have let me drown, but you can’t cling to the side your whole life, that one lesson every parent needs to teach a child is “If you don’t want to sink, you better figure out how to swim.” Rex instilled self-reliance in Jeanette and the kids at a very young age. He was a terrible parent, but he did accelerate their self-reliance. This picture shows the self-reliance the Walls kids were shown at a very young age. Self reliance has helped them throughout their whole lives and is part of their success.

Broken Promises

"But since we couldn't afford to pay the towns trash-collection fee, our garbage was really piling up. One day Dad told us to dump it in the hole."But that's for the Glass Castle," I said. "It's a temporary measure," Dad told me." This perfectly illustrates the theme broken promises because Rex promised for so long that they would build the Glass Castle, and the trash in the foundation symbolizes that its never gonna happen. This picture shows broken promises and the effect it has on people. Jeanette was devastated about the outcome of the Glass Castle

Unconditional Love

" Dad please come, we need you!" I hollered.

Lori and Brian and mom and Maureen all chimed in. "We need you!" we shouted. "You're the head of the family! You're the dad! Come on!"
This quote from when the family was leaving for West Virginia shows unconditional love for rex even though he is a terrible father and has put his kids in unspeakable situations. At the end of the day the Jeanette and the kids love him. The picture shows how the kids have unconditional love for Rex, but more specifically Jeanette's love for Rex.

""Pervert!" I yelled and kicked at the man's hand. Brian came running into the room with a hatchet he kept by his bed, and the man bolted out the door. Dad was out that night, and when Mom slept, she was dead to the world, so Brian and I ran after the man ourselves" This quote shows the loyalty Brian has for Jeanette and vice versa. Overall though the kids were loyal for each other not just Brian and Jeanette being loyal for each other. They were always there for each other. This picture symbolizes how the kids have each others backs and would do anything for each other.

"None of us said a thing. Brian snatched up the chocolate bar and divided it into four pieces. While mom watched, we wolfed them down" This shows how desperate the kids were to survive when they found Rose Mary hoarding a chocolate candy bar and this also shows how bad the parents had failed their kids. The picture symbolizes how they were living in welch, finding scraps of wood and the occasional coal for the furnace in welch.

Non-Conform

Later that night, Dad stopped the car out in the middle of the desert, and we slept under the stars. We had no pillows, but Dad said that was part of his plan. He was teaching us to have good posture. The Indians didn't use pillows, either, he explained, and look how straight they stood. We did have our scratchy army-surplus blankets, so we spread them out and lay there, looking up at the field of stars. I told Lori how lucky we were to be sleeping out under the sky like Indians.

'We could live like this forever,' I said.

'I think we're going to,' she said.
This whole sequence shows how different the Walls lifestyle is and how they don't conform to society. They would rather be on the road than settle somewhere and make a life for themselves. The kids grow to hate their lifestyle and just want to be normal kids. The picture shows the kind of lifestyle the Walls family was living throughout the book. Moving around and temporarily living somewhere else.
