My favorite character from the story is David. At the beginning of the book, he is introduced to us as being kind of a hero. We are teased with the image of this cool and mysterious guy named David, leader of a different world, The Smoke. For example, when Shay first talks about David and says "He's...different." But then, when we meet him, we realize that he's down to earth and a very normal guy. For example, even though he's known as the leader of the smokies, he eats the same food,

works just as much as the other smokies and he also sleeps in a sleeping bag.

My least favorite character from the novel is Tally. I don't like her because she doesn't have her own personality in the story. She is a conformist, when she says: "I wan't to be a pretty like the others." People that are conformist are followers, and she follows everyone and also she betrays a lot of her friends and her people : "Her only way home was to betray her friend" . Sure she does heroic things but it is not always for the good reasons.

Breaking News! We, special circumstances, have finally discovered the hideout of our fugitives. After sending an undercover spy over there with a manual tracking device around 2 weeks ago, the spy finally activated the device, which sent us her location and thus, The Smoke's location. The Smoke, which is located in the middle of nowhere, is built like a village from the Rusties age, with little to none modern technology. We burned their village down and captured all of their villagers, the Smokies.

Two themes from the book. The idea of happiness is the first theme, as it is discussed throughout the book. It is thought by the uglies, that the only way to gain happiness is to be turned into a pretty at 16. They live for that moment and so did Tally. However, people like Shay and David offer us a different opinion. They rather be different and be free than being pretty. And Tally also believes so at the end. Another theme would be loyalty. Throughout part 2, Tally has to decide whether she'll stay loyal to special circumstances, or the smoke. It's pretty much all she can seem to think about. She wants to turn pretty, make her parents proud and go see Peris, however, she gets attached to the smoke and it's nice people. The thought of betraying them for her sake troubles her more and more.

Breaking News !
There are many people who tried to escape who were arrested just a week ago by special circumstances in a secret village called Smoke. These prisoners were brought back to New Pretty Town and were caught by special circumstances in a secret building with great security. David and Tally were not arrested, so they started helping others escape. Maddy and Az the creators of Smoke were also prisoners. Az who has suffered atrocious experiences is dead. The prisoners escaped and now they are heading to a place where they will be safe.

Tally and Shay. They're both daredevils. For example, when they would ride outside the city on their hover boards, even tho it wasn't allowed. However, Shay put a bigger value on her freedom than her appearance. She didn't want to be like everybody else, didn't want to have her existence controlled. However, Tally was fine with becoming a pretty even tho it meant losing her freedom and herself to the operation.

The main conflict throughout the book is person vs. person, as a result of the different perspectives of Special Circumstances, and the Smokies. The two enemies struggle to enforce, or continue their idea on how life is to be lived. Tally becomes ensnared in this conflict and joins the Smokies as they combat to oppose Special Circumstances in their multiple attempts to end the way of living in the Smoke. The second main conflict is man vs society. Man vs society because Tally is fighting vs the society. Tally is thinking about how pretty she will be in the future. However, when she meets Shay, somethings she has thought before, know she questions her self after meeting Shay. Shay brings a whole new ideas to Tally's way of thinking about the city and their future lives in the society they were born into and at first, Tally doesn't know if it's good or bad.

What I liked about part 5 was the way that the author described the different environments they passed through on their way to the city. For example, this is a quote from when Tally and David get to the desert, and this is how tally describe what she sees, "the cables still lay buried in the desert, protected by the shifting sands and a near-total absence of rainfall."(p.326) The way the scene is described, gives us a clear picture of what this environment looks like, and this process is repeated throughout their whole journey to the city. However, what I didn't like about part 3, was that it took too long for Tally and David to reach their friends. "Ten days"(p.325), is what David told Tally, when she asked how long it would take to reach the city. It is unreasonable and unrealistic to think that in a ten day period, Special Circumstances would not have been able to either kill the smokies, or turn them into pretties. They shouldn't have been able to get to them in time.

The antagonist of the novel is Dr. Cable. It's Dr. Cable because she manipulate the principal character of the story, Tally. She haves a lot of psychological characteristic, but they are all negative. Dr. Cable is a pure villain because she has jailed all the people of the smoke and destroyed the city of smoke. She had thought and she transformed them in action. She doesn't care about the people that is around her because she only thinks about her priorities and to stay the leader of the special circumstances. Something else shows that she is the antagonist of the story when she forced Shay to become a pretty even without the consent of Shay. Even Shay, when she's pretty and likes everyone, recognizes that Cable is a monster: "I know Dr. Cable was horrible to you". Maddy and Az
are the opposite, whether physically or psychologically.

I think that anyone should read this book because it reflects the reality in which we live. There are young teenagers who think only about beauty, so they want to do aesthetic chiurgies. This book makes you think and reflect on the situation of several young people and also adults. In addition, in this book, there are many lessons that we learn that could help us in everyday life. That it is on the point of loyalty between friend, that it is to make our own judgments on certain point of our life and not to follow the others and to have his own notion of the life.
