Lutou contra a discriminação racial e tornou-se um dos mais importantes líderes dos movimentos pelos direitos civis dos negros nos Estados Unidos. Recebeu o Prêmio Nobel da Paz de 1964. Nasceu em Atlanta, nos EUA, no dia 15 de janeiro de 1929. Filho e neto de pastores da Igreja Batista resolveu seguir pelo mesmo caminho. Em 1951 formou-se em Teologia na Morehouse College. Quatro anos depois, concluiu doutorado em Filosofia pela Universidade de Boston. Em 1954 assumiu a função de pastor na cidade de Montgomery, no Estado do Alabama, local onde ocorriam os maiores conflitos raciais do país. O discurso I Have a Dream ou em português Eu Tenho um Sonho, é um discurso emblemático da autoria de Martin Luther King, que foi essencial no movimento dos direitos civis dos Estados Unidos da América.
Considerado por muitos um dos melhores discursos de todos os tempos, foi feito nos degraus do Lincoln Memorial, em Washington DC (nos Estados Unidos) no dia 28 de Agosto de 1963.
