Before: The elks felt safe in areas of danger like by the water over browsed. The elks population grew way to large. Cottonwood and Aspen trees did not grow very big and population decreased. Other plants and shrubs didn't grow much an were eaten too. Soil eroded and the water didn't get good shade and the temperature increased and got broader and shallower and birds didn't have enough nest material. Populations of all of the fish and beaver and aquatics went down. Other animal populations went down because of food shortages like squirels and foxes and coyotes and voles.
After: The wolves ate many elk and brought balance. The trees and plants were able to grow in size and population. The plant and tree growth stopped the soil erosion and helped support fish and other aquatic life and other animals and birds by correcting the water levels and temperature for fish and aquatic animals to live and thrive in. Elk couldn't over browse by the water anymore. Plants and trees could provide food and shelter and nesting areas for other animals. Wolves left carrion for scavengers to eat. Foxes and coyotes now had more small animals to eat and bison now had lots of grass to graze on so they could live there and grow in population too. The habitat was restored and made healthy again because of the wolves.
