Located on a promontory jutting out from the western side of Unguja island into the Indian Ocean, the Stone Town of Zanzibar is an outstanding example of a Swahili trading town. This type of town developed on the coast of East Africa, further expanded under Arab, Indian, and European influences, but retained its indigenous elements, to form an urban cultural unit unique to this region.

The Stone Town of Zanzibar retains its urban fabric and townscape virtually intact and contains many fine buildings that reflect its particular culture, which has brought together and homogenized disparate elements of the cultures of Africa, the Arab region, India, and Europe over more than a millennium.

The buildings of the Stone Town, executed principally in coralline ragstone and mangrove timber, set in a thick lime mortar and then plastered and lime-washed, reflect a complex fusion of Swahili, Indian, Arab and European influences in building traditions and town planning. The two storey houses with long narrow rooms disposed round an open courtyard, reached through a narrow corridor, are distinguished externally by elaborately carved double ‘Zanzibar’ doors, and some by wide vernadahs, and by richly decorated interiors. Together with, the simple ground floor Swahili houses and the narrow façade Indian shops along “bazaar” streets constructed around a commercial space “duka”.

The major buildings date from the 18th and 19th centuries and include monuments such as the Old Fort, built on the site of an earlier Portuguese church; the house of wonder, a large ceremonial palace built by Sultan Barghash; the Old Dispensary; St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Cathedral; Christ Church Anglican Cathedral commemorating the work of David Livingston in abolishing the slave trade and built on the site of the last slave market; the residence of the slave trader Tippu Tip; the Malindi Bamnara Mosque; the Jamat Khan built for the Ismaili sect; the Royal Cemetery; the Hamamni and other Persian baths. Together with the narrow, winding street pattern, large mansions facing the seafront and open spaces these buildings form an exceptional urban settlement reflecting the longstanding trading activity between the African and Asian seaboards. In particular the Stone town’s is also marked by being the site where slave-trading was finally terminated.

It was built by Omani Arabs after expelling the Portuguese in 1699. It was used as a garrison and prison in the 19th century, and as a terminal of the Zanzibar railways 1905-28. A new guardhouse was built in 1947 and used as the ladies' club, and an amphitheatre was added in the 1990s. It is now the headquarters of the Zanzibar international film festival.

It was later used as a prison and as barracks. In early 20th century it was also used as a depot during the construction of the railway that connected Stone Town to the village of Bububu.

The fort is essentially a square of high, brown walls with merlons, protecting an inner courtyard.

During the Summit, the delegates will be accommodated in 3 different hotels that are close to each other. Prison Island was uninhabited until the 1860s when the first Sultan of Zanzibar, Majid bin Said, gifted it to 2 Arab slave owners who used the island as a prison for rebellious slaves.

In 1893, British First Minister, Lloyd Matthews, acquired the island and planned to build a prison on this tranquil outpost. Although the building work was completed in 1894, the prison never housed any inmates.

In the 1920s, Prison Island was transformed into a quarantine island that served British territories in East Africa. The prison buildings were converted into a hospital, and patients were monitored for 1-2 weeks before they were permitted to leave.

Delegates will have the chance to visit this island.

Stay tuned for more excursion options

Most people who are traveling to Zanzibar choose to fly to the mainland of Tanzania and then take an inexpensive and comfortable ferry to the island. This is because flying straight to Zanzibar can be quite expensive, especially during the high season. Therefore, it is advisable for delegates to compare flight fares and consider this option.

If delegates decide to fly to Julius Nyerere International Airport, they will need to book flights that arrive in the morning hours. This is because all boats heading to Zanzibar are scheduled to stop operating by 4 pm. It is important for delegates to plan their arrival time accordingly to ensure they can catch a ferry to the island.

Upon arrival at Julius Nyerere International Airport terminal 3, there will be a bus available to transport delegates from the airport to the ferry station. The drive from the airport to the ferry station typically takes around 21 minutes.

The boat ride from the mainland to Zanzibar usually takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. It is a scenic journey across the Indian Ocean, allowing travelers to enjoy beautiful views along the way.

For those who choose to fly directly to Zanzibar and land at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, there will also be a bus available to transport them from the airport to Stone Town.

The Zanzibar African Youth Arts Festival is a vibrant and dynamic celebration that brings together young artists from various regions to showcase their talent, promote cultural exchange, and foster community engagement. This festival serves as a platform for youth to express themselves through various art forms, including visual arts, performing arts, and filmmaking. By providing opportunities for interaction and collaboration, the festival aims to empower young artists and create a space where they can share their experiences and perspectives with others from around the world.

One of the key highlights of the African Youth Arts Festival is the exhibition of artwork created by young artists. During the high season, these talented individuals have the opportunity to exhibit their work in designated areas along the seafront. These open exhibition spaces allow for a larger number of participants to engage with the artwork and interact with the festival delegates. This not only provides exposure for the young artists but also enables them to receive feedback and connect with potential mentors or collaborators.

In addition to visual arts, the festival also features performances by young artists in venues such as the Old Fort. Throughout the day, these performances serve as a means for cultural exchange and expression. The young artists come together to showcase their talents and share what the arts mean to them personally and within their respective cultures. This exchange of ideas and perspectives helps foster a deeper understanding and appreciation for diverse artistic expressions.

Furthermore, the African Youth Arts Festival has a broader purpose of extending the presence of the IYMS Summit into East Africa. By organizing this festival in East Africa, youth from countries in this region are provided with opportunities to meet filmmakers, artists, and other youth from around the world. This cross-cultural interaction not only enriches their artistic experiences but also broadens their horizons by exposing them to different creative approaches, techniques, and perspectives.

Evie notes (12/20/23)

My main note would be to focus in every line of the doc on What's In It For Them - (yes, it will enable changemakers, but how will a company benefit? How many eyeballs will see their name? How can they use it in their PR and Marketing? etc.)

Since we’re sending it with the pitch piece, I think we can lose a lot of the descriptions of the event

I would suggest just highlights of the Summit and ZAYAF, with exciting details (how many delegates from how many countries? How many people involved in ZAYAF?)

For the big-ticket items - great perks! Especially things like social media and allowing their ads at events

Maybe one page each for those top three levels (Hard to read in columns)

Can we include all the sponsorships from the pitch piece? Media Sponsor, Transportation Sponsor, etc. I think those will be more attractive...

Originally I thought we should try to keep it to a couple of pages; but looking at the ZIFF sponsorship package, it seems more important to take up more pages... ZIFF's is clear and clean, and I'm guessing very appealing to biz types

Re: sponsorship proposal

Excellent job. I agree with Evelyn, however, regarding the benefits details. Having it in three columns (obviously for comparisons) means that the formatting is awkward. It would. Be better to give each level its own page with each benefit numbered.

I think the shorter you can make the document, the better. People will not have the patience to read a lengthy document. Five pages is about right which you can still accomplish if you eliminate the parts that are already described at length in the pitch document.

There are a few typos, but I would prefer to point them out to you from a word document rather than a pdf.
