page 32, line 6.

I like this quote because it shows how observant Nick Carraway is. When they first meet, Nick Carraway is in awe of Gatsby. Nick has only heard rumours up to this point, so he has a lot of expectations It gives a good first impression of Gatsby. The reader has waited with anticipation to be introduced to the character after whom the book is named after.

"He smiled understandingly - much more than understandingly. It was one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life. It face - or seemed to face - the whole eternal world for an instant, and then concentrates on you with an irresistaible prejudice in your favour. It understood you just as far as you wanted to be understood, believed in you as you would like to believe yourself, and assured you that it had precisely the impression of you that, at your best, you hoped to convey."

p. 94 l. 28

(About Daisy's house)

"There was a ripe mystery about it, a hint of bedrooms upstairs more beautiful and cool than other bedrooms, of gay and radiant activities taking place through its corridors, and of romances that were not musty and laid away already in lavender but fresh and breathing and redolent of this year's shining motor cars and of dances whose flowers were scarcely withered"

This is my favorite quotation because of the vivid imagery. I like how it links the theme of the book (eg. parties and cars) to Gatsby's idea of the house.

This quotation corresponds directly to Gatsby's feelings for Daisy and his thoughts about her when he first met her. She was exciting, beautiful and "fresh".

Perhaps what this quote says about the parties corresponds to what Gatsby thought of his own parties and what he hoped they would bring.

I've gotten all these things for her and now she just... she just wants to run away".

It's my favourite quotation, because it shows the whole conflict in one sentence. Gatsbys only focus is to get Daisy back, and he thinks that wealth and spending money, is the way to reach her heart. But she can't start up a whole new life with him. Instead of finding a solution, she leaves him with a very small hope, that she doesn't have the courage to fulfill.

It illustrates Gatsbys frustration over Daisys splitted personality, but also how Nick has become a close friend to him. He's reaching out for help, and the qout is very emotional. It shows how your own lust and longing can create an unrealistic ambition, without thinking of the consequences for other people.

In the following quote, it becomes clear that Daisy in some sense only was a part of Gatsby's great plan of imagined perfection. It shows here that Gatsby doesn't necessarily love Daisy. This shows Gatsby's vanity, and by the end of the quote we hear that once a man is fixed in his dreams it is practically impossible to change his mind.

"There must have been moments even that afternoon when Daisy tumbled short of his dreams -- not through her own fault, but because of the colossal vitality of his illusion. It had gone beyond her, beyond everything. He had thrown himself into it with a creative passion, adding to it all the time, decking it out with every bright feather that drifted his way. No amount of fire or freshness can challenge what a man will store up in his ghostly heart."
