The poem, The Dying Gladiator by Lord Byron, is indeed remarkable for its sense of pathos (Sadness). It is an extract from Childe Harolds Pilgrimage, where Childe Harold narrates his experiences at the Colosseum. The setting of the poem is the Roman amphitheatre, where the Romans have gathered to witness a fight between a Goth and their champion. The gladiator is unarmed and very soon, his opponent gives him a fatal stab on his side. Unable to bear the pain, the gladiator leans upon his hand. It is certain that he has surrendered to death. But, by doing so, he will not feel pain anymore. The gladiator feels giddy and in his state of giddiness, it seems as if the amphitheatre is turning. The last drops of blood fall from his wound like drops of rain before a downpour. Even while the merciless Roman audience is cheering its champion, the poor gladiator dies.

Before dying, the gladiator thinks about his wife and little ones. He recalls the hut by the river Danube, where he lived with his family. He pictures his children at play and thinks of his dear wife as well. His head is flooded with memories, just as his body is, with blood.

Maximus is a powerful Roman general, loved by the people and the aging Emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Before his death, the Emperor chooses Maximus to be his heir over his own son, Commodus, and a power struggle leaves Maximus and his family condemned to death. The powerful general is unable to save his family, and his loss of will allows him to get captured and put into the Gladiator games until he dies. The only desire that fuels him now is the chance to rise to the top so that he will be able to look into the eyes of the man who will feel his revenge. —Chris "Morphy" Terry by Huzaifa Umer
