I believe one of the main reasons that the Salem Witch trials happened was because they had a want for power. Based on the DBQ Document E, 97% of the people who accused other people of witchcraft were from the side of the town that was poorer. Also, 83% of the people who were accused were from the side that was rich. This evidence shows us that the poor people were jealous and power hungry so they accused rich people so they could feel more powerful.

A Crazy Thing To Occur

This event was definitely a hoax and many people were scared by it. They were so scared that they even started accusing DOGS of being witches. As the video says at 0:18 that they were executed. Also, according to Doc B, there were only about 34 people were the accusers. They would keep on accusing so they couldn't be accused. This shows people were finding every reason to be scared, even though there was no real reason to be scared.

I believe another reason for the killing of so many people was fame. In Doc D, Charles Upton states, "They soon... became intoxicated... by the terrible success of their imposture (acting)..." He is saying that the women would think of themselves as great actors, which they were, and they would use their acting abilities to accuse and convict others of witchcraft to get them hanged. To sate their hunger for fame, they would again play the victim to get attention.
