Reflection on beginning

The first chunk of the book focuses on a bit of backstory regarding the main character who's name isn't given. The book establishes what kind of character we can expect him to be as he seems sort of uninterested in the world and the facade that he thinks people put on. He went to an All-boys school which he flunked out of though he didn't seem to care much as he hadn't built much of a relationship with anyone but his History teacher and his wife. The people around him are trying to teach him that there are rules to the game called life that he must follow, however he believes strongly in his ideals and doesn't really listen to anyone. The start of the book is mostly focused on character building which I feel it does well as the main character seems very down to Earth and idealistic which I can connect to personally.

Confused on focus of book

I'm a bit confused on where the book is going. So far, the main plot of the book seems to be Holden Caulfield's adventures around New York before he goes home and admits to his parents that he was kicked out of school. He doesn't seem to have a main antagonist, a main focus, and the book doesn't seem to be going any direction but to that ending. Holden's focus and desires are confusing as I don't really know what he wants and his travels thus far seem to be slight detours rather than actual points of interest to keep the plot moving forward.

The main conflict in the book occurs between Holden and himself. He constantly thinks one way and acts another showing that he's having an identity crisis of sorts and constantly shows signs of suffering from depression. He doesn't know who he is or what he wants to do and masks this by creating fake names and personalities that he acts like depending on the situation he's faced with.

New York City is a place famous for attracting many different types of individuals. The people Holden meets are varied in every way and they all bring a new type of conflict to Holden that he has to deal with. The way he travels around and runs out of money so quickly is also reinforced by the book taking place in New York. The public transportation system is huge in New York and hotels and food is very expensive making it very believable that Holden would spend irresponsibly and run out of money in no time.

What I like most about the book is Holden's struggle within himself and how it all comes to play in the end. His interaction and love for his family also makes him likable in the end. His outlook on life is also very similar to min even if we live the exact opposite. What I dislike however, is his tendency to go on a tangent and get side tracked easily. A number of times throughout the story, Holden will put the overall narrative on hold to tell a personal story that has very little to do with what is actually going on at the time.
