In the beginning, Brazil was raised as an equal partner to the Empire, leading to the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil, and the Algarve's. They expanded Brazil by invading modern day Uruguay in 1816. Once John had left Brazil, he sent his son, Pedro to control Brazil. However, Pedro's role was reduced by Cortes to a prince. At this time, they could only trade with Portugal once again. After attempted mutinies, Pedro then heard about Cortes wanting to remove all power he had and all the rules in the government he had made before. This sparked something and Pedro then declared independence. He had went back to Rio to do so. After this he became and ruled as emperor under constitutional rules. This finally separated both Portugal and Brazil from each other which caused more trouble. In March 1823, they had a mini battle and Brazil was crushed. After this, Brazil started to recruit members from other nations. This caused Portugal to retreat, ending the battle with no bloodshed in 1824.
