Rather than making students turn in one specific product showing analysis, I can provide options, including digital, for students to show mastery.

A majority of the book asks educators to refocus where our priorities lie. Do we care more about teaching Great Gatsby to students who will just steal answers off Spark Notes or do we try to use passages and material that makes a personal connection to the material? The goal in learning is to teach the skills necessary for students to succeed in college and in life. That can be done using any type of passage and there is more buy-in if students care.

Personal connection for students can be as simple as providing students with a variety of choice when it comes to analyzing a piece of text. As a class we can do one together and model it together. Then print out four or five other pieces of text and have the students analyze whatever one they chose. Personal Connection can also be asking student to consistently question how the material relates to their own life.

As educators we need to stop hovering over students. We should act as guides and give them the tools necessary to succeed. The main area of handing over responsibility has to be with how students choose to present their knowledge to teachers. We need to give students choice.
