This year we started our mentoring session. Its a good to communicate with the students however, it reach its aim for this year. So for next year, we should get it started early and end it by May. In sem 2, we can focus in other areas.

One- time Activities like football matches, Mother's day special and Cooking at Sunrice. Through these activities it helps the students to work on something beyond academic and they enjoy themselves.

Mini competitions on a fortnight basis to keep the students population attending the sessions. Competitions can be anything with the gear up room facilities. Activities such as admonition, PS-5, Sudoku, Crossword puzzle. Just to encourage student participation. Accumulated points can be exchanged for some gifts at school bookshop.

Please excuse me k. These are some questions I’m still asking myself and don’t have the answers yet. Perhaps something we can all think about too. Or maybe I’m just blur; you all have the answers already. 😂

Mentoring Sessions

Establish the purpose and student outcomes we’d like from these sessions. Is it about building rapport between mentors and students? Is it about building students’ self-esteem and motivation?
Frequency of sessions. I think structure and frequency of sessions should facilitate what we want to achieve. As of now, based on the way it’s structured, I may not be able to conduct the mentoring session due to other commitments and this makes it harder for follow-ups during the next one. From the students’ POV, I feel like it’s hard for them to also be serious about this as there isn’t 1 particular teacher they are attached to for mentoring.
Proper closure at the end of sem/year. Perhaps there was, but again, I wasn’t around. 🙏🏻

Use All Ears form for sign-ups as it’s based on their NRIC/MIMs. This is to ensure there’s no double sing-ups or friends secretly signing students up for activities they do not want.
Cap the number of students in the gear up room at any one time. For safety and emergency purposes as well as to ensure other activities can be carried out effectively. Also, to reduce the noise pollution!

Give Gear Up students a list of all the activities they have signed up for at the start of the term to give them a heads-up and to curb last minute absenteeism. So once they sign up for it, their names are considered confirmed and compulsory for them to attend.
