Causes of Witchcraft Hysteria

There were several causes of hysteria in Salem. One cause was that is was believed that God chose who was going to heaven and there was nothing that could be done to change that decision. Another cause was that they believed the devil was alive and well. Also, it only took one accusation to be charged for witchcraft. Witchcraft produced opportunities to get back at neighbors.

The belief that Jesus only died for the ones he chose was a part of Calvinism. Salvation is a free gift and could felt in an emotional experience at church or such. The emotional encounter tells you if your are one that was chosen by God and are going to Heaven. There was no way to change if you were not picked by God to go to heaven. The Puritan community was a theocracy.

Betty Paris became ill and it was soon. Concluded that it was because of witchcraft. Other girls soon claimed they were affected by witchcraft and the trials began. The girls would react in strange ways when an accused witch was present, which is shown in the picture below. By the end of 1692, over 200 people were accused and jailed for witchcraft. Only 19 of those 200 were hung. A man was pressed to death by stones for refusing to submit to a trial for witchcraft charges.

The Puritans wanted everything about their religion to be pure. They were pure themselves and very plain. They were a movement fore reform. The Puritans did not like the Church of England or the Roman Catholic Church. To them, if you are alive you are a sinner.
