I used the under glazes as a foundational coloring.

I chose to cover my narrative head in one color, I used the rutile blue. I wanted to give my head a very Roman sculptor vibe. Which is why I wanted my whole sculptor to be all one color. If I had to change one thing about my sculpture I would maybe adjust the shape of the mouth to look more natural. I think my narrative head expresses what my intention was, I wanted it to be screaming. I am very happy with how it came out, and am excited to see what it looks like after the high-fire.

If I could redo the assignment, I would definitely take more time on detailing the facial features such as the eyes, and the mouth part, but overall, I think it will come out nice, it should look like a real-life statue, maybe something even ancient.

Yes, I still think regardless of my little fix ups on the piece the narrative came out nice. The narrative was “The Dark Knight” which was solely based off the Christopher Nolan films, there is a statue in the end of the final one that I was inspired by! I even put an image of that below to show!

In this project, I used underglaze to apply color. After considering various glaze options, I decided to use clear glaze only on the eyes and let it drip slightly to create a teardrop effect, leaving the rest of the piece unglazed. I’m quite satisfied with the final result, though I feel the hair looks a bit unnatural and hope to improve it next time. This work is about women and speech — throughout history, and even today, women’s voices have often been ignored or silenced.

Hi everyone, my head has not yet been through the firing process yet. So sadly the glaze is not complete. However if I did have to go back and redo the sculpture I would make the mask part of my head with actually clay or use a thicker slip. It is just to fragile and falls off sometimes. However now it does express a different narrative with the mask falling of. Some what of a slow "unmasking" look or breaking free narrative.

I used 1-2 layers of cream glaze brushed over blue slip over Bravo Buff. There is some T2 clay as part of the shoulders. I’m not sure how it will look, but I tried to be light on the cream glaze since it looks it may be a little runny, and I wanted to see if I can get the blue slip underneath to show through the cream. Hopefully I did not overapply.

My intention is to have the hair look like water waves. I hope that cream with its purple where thin and white where thick over the blue slip will look ethereal ocean-esque. The narrative is of a contemplative nature spirit.

For underglaze I used I used red, blue, yellow, green and emerald. The first four for the face and back of the head and features on the face. Emerald glaze was for the rest of the head. Then I put clear glaze over the whole head. I really enjoyed what I did with this one. I had trouble with the eyes mainly and that would be the one element I wish I could improve on to be more detailed. The rest I was really happy with, especially the colors on the back. I also really like how I did the mouth. The artistic idea I had was have the four elements on top of the head spew out the back and all come together for the emerald glaze across the head. They form to bring life and harmony like they do with the earth itself.

I spent a little over an hour sanding down the sharp pieces of glaze that pooled at the bottom of this piece. If I were to redo this piece, I would definitely apply less of the cream glaze. I did really want it to pool at the bottom though… so maybe to get that same effect, but not need to sand and stick to the kiln shelf, I would create a lip next time while the clay is still wet to catch the glaze at the bottom. Originally, I was not planning to use cream, but transparent though.

The glaze is cream applied with brush as over blue slip applied mainly on the top side of the head in patches over bravo buff. The body is bravo buff but with T2 applied in patches over the body.

I am very pleased with how it turned out, and I feel it does tell the narrative I was hoping! The hair looks like a waterfall over the earthy face. The blue slip where it shows through unexpectedly but happily turned green like moss, or little islands in the ocean. I like how the kiln firing also appeared to get toasty on the thinner parts of her face, making her appear to blush a bit and look more alive.

I painted the glasses with copper oxide to give off a light pink hue to differentiate the materials.

The result was far from what I expected and was rather disappointed in the look. The reason for this is that the glaze was not anything like the testers would have had me to believe. For reference, the glasses ended up being black. regardless I still find the result alright just not as I imagined.

While my narrative has changed a bit given the glaze result, I wanted to capture the ego of a mad scientist and I believe the bust does an excellent job in showing that desire.

The one thing i don't like about her is her patchy skin. The choice of painting it on was my mistake. I thought i put even amount of layers but i clearly didn’t.

Does the artwork express the narrative that you intended? I wanted her to look like she could be related to me and its funny she actually looks like my real sister a bit .

What glazes did you use and why did you choose them?

I used Titanium Yellow, Copper Red, Mediterranean Blue, and Iron Oxide. I used them because I had a fairly successful combination with them during the summer class (as seen in the second picture, except that I used Shanner Red instead of Copper Red during summer)

Please describe your result and what you would change if you were to redo the sculpture.

Ha ha ha ha.... I would change everything if I could redo it. I was hoping to get something like the second picture, and because it's a swimming narrative, that with a splash of blue like water. I think several things went wrong- one, different clay bodies. For some reason, I thought I was using t2 during the summer, but I think it was probably bravo buff. I also naively assumed that copper red would act the same way as shanner red (because they're both red, right?). So for the summer bust, I wiped away the shanner red and it still came out strong. However, the copper red seemed to completely die from doing that. I also didn't apply enough Mediterranean blue the first time, so I re-glazed and fired again, but I didn't realize that it further bakes the clay, so everything turned out even more muted. If I could redo the glaze, I would do something like Lisa did on her female figure (third picture). She used stony white and then threw underglaze on top of it. The colors/vibe are really nice on it. I've also learned to add more depth/definition features on the bust so that they show under the glaze. However, the glazes I used where way too thin, so everything is a little too strong/sharp. I think Lisa's glazing would have also been the perfect amount of coverage in terms of feature definition.

Does the artwork express the narrative that you intended? What is that narrative?

Not at all. I think the vibe gives more like a firefighter coloring than a swimmer. Or like some type of darker theme. Maybe like an undertaker or something... The narrative I was going for was a swimmer who ranked high or beat a PR or something. Like in the olympics, whenever they finish their races, they always look up and react. I wanted to capture that moment right after.
