Nina has grown up in a big household, being the one who has practically raised her family, as well as well as helped her father run the family business, Nina is looking for a break. Living in Queens she wants nothing more but to leave the only place she's only since a child. Planning to leave Queens and explore the world, after being tied down to one location for her whole life. With the responsibilities of running her family after her mother passed away, she has had one friend who has been through it all with her since they were kids.

Ninas’s best friend Joe Marteri wants nothing more the opposite of what Nina wants. He wants to stay in Queens, the only place he's known all his life and have a child. He has always been by her side and has come to ask her the favor of having her child. Although Nina has no intention of being a mother, she wants to experience what it is like to give birth. Nina not wanting to fail her best friend, Nina finds herself in the most of the difficult decisions. To help the one person who's been there for her and helped her and her family, or turn her back. Yet the fact that he seems more attractive with each passing day, and she seems more attractive to him with each passing day, they fall into a mess of chaos

Judging a book by its cover

This cover says more than one could imagine , especially when one pays close attention. In smaller print compared to the title, it reads, “Falling in love isn’t part of the deal”. Which raises questions of how the two people involved in the story end up falling in love during the “nine-month plan”, if it was only a deal. Putting one and two together, the cover says a lot without having to say a lot, as well as captivate the author with no need of revealing too much of the story. - Queren Villegas

“I'm still glad I tried it. At Least I now I know what it's like.” - Nina Pg. 28

This quote stuck out to me because it shows a part of Nina's personality. Even though she is tired of her life and wants a break, she still values the fact that she has experienced what she's experienced and has learned what she has so far.

“It's for Joey, who has done so much for you. Now it’s your turn. You’re doing this for joey.” - Nina Pg. 96

This quote stuck out specifically to me because I personally have heard before that when you love someone that you do things for them because you want to, not because they do something for you and therefore then you return the favor.

“I definitely wished I was somewhere else” -Nina Pg. 194

This quote stuck out a lot to me, because NIna’s main issue in this story is that she wishes she was anywhere else but Queens, yet soon enough she has doubts of what she wants.

Reader To Reader

If you're the type of reader who likes stories about love and change within a person, then this is a book you should read. I would recommend this book as a quick read, the story line is good, the build up is entertaining, the characters are compelling, due to their vibrant personalities. The factor of two completely similar personalities wanting completely the opposite thing in life raises suspense within the story. Making it not only controversial within the story itself but the growth of both characters. One can say there is a second story within the main story about love, giving the reader a two for one deal.

On the other hand, if I was to not recommend it, it would be due to it being a predictable love story. Although it is a very well written and entertaining book, it’s foreseen plot is draining from the entertainment factor. Therefore would not recommend it to readers who love an unforeseeable ending or climax. The rising action and falling action may be different from other stories, yet the main point stays consistent with other cliche love stories. I will not deny that it is a good book for a quick read, yet it’s not a book one obsesses over after reading it.

The reason to why I chose this song for the book, was for the reason that it speaks of love and accepting the significant other no matter the flaws, because they have all of one another and that's enough for them. The characters in the book, that being Nina and Joey portray the same relationship, as well as express this idea through their action throughout the course of the book.

My voice on this book

The entertaining factor of two best friends falling in love was something I really liked. The only reason being that when it comes to love, in my personal opinion, it should be with someone who you can be your complete self around. A best friend is someone who doesn't judge you or make you feel wrong for who you are, they just simply love you for you. I did not, however, like the factor that it implied the stereotypical “you can’t stay best friends with the opposite sex”. Because a girl can be close friends with a guy without having romantic feeling for them and vice versa.

In this book specifically, the only connection I could make with this book was the fact that like the main character, Nina Chikalini, I want to explore the world outside of Philadelphia. I want to see the different places, the different people, cultures, and ways of living around the world, to learn and experience the world. I can compare it to another book I have read called “The Glass Castle”, where the main character Jeannette wanted to leave her hometown, yet in her story, she desires so to flee her scaring past, yet Nina wants to leave to take a break from everything yet won’t things such as family or who she is behind like Jeanette. It reminded me that while many want to leave their past behind, such as Nina and Jeannette, while others like Joe Materi, want to stay where their past is. The book itself was not relatable to me in many ways besides the only connection I’ve mentioned, the subject of the book about being in love does not relate to me or at least refuse to believe it.
