"Primary research is new research, carried out to answer specific issues or questions. It can involve questionnaires, surveys or interviews with individuals or small groups.
Secondary research makes use of information previously researched for other purposes and publicly available. This is also known as 'desk research'. Secondary research includes published research reports in a library, surveys or the Internet.
2.1 - Qualities and Skills of A Researcher

1. Communication skills - 5
I have given myself a five for this as I feel that I don't feel I have a problem getting a message across. I have a large vocabulary and this helps when I need to research something specific, and I'll usually know exactly what I am looking for. Communication skills are vital in professional practice because they will help me to work to the best of my abilities in a team or workforce as well as being essential to me making connections and networking.

2. Persistence - 3
For persistence I have given myself a 3. I feel this is suitable because of my limited motivation. If I am passionate about a project I will persist indefinitely, which would be really useful in terms of finding obscure research, however in a situation where I am not determined my persistence may be affected. In professional practice persistence is important because as someone who wants to be a journalist, I must persist to get information when interviewing persons of interest.

3. Confidence - 5
I have labelled my confidence a 5 because I am always confident in what I do and how I present myself. I rarely if ever feel intimidated by people or work. This is beneficial to how I create and present my work, and is catalytic to my independence as a researcher. Confidence will go hand-in-hand with communication skills in professional practice and is necessary when asking questions, particularly as a journalist.

4. Knowledge of key terminology - 3
My knowledge of key terminology is very basic hence why I have given myself a 3. As I said before I have an extensive vocabulary, and I'm sure that most terminology in the field of media and research I'm already aware of, I just need to know these terms in the context of these subjects. Expanding my knowledge of key terms would help when identifying certain more niche areas of research. Key terminology would be incredibly important within professional practice because I'd need to know what my colleagues or other parties mean when they mention these terms.

In conclusion I'd say the most important skill for a researcher out of these four would be communication skills, because without communication a researcher would have real difficulty communicating their question when trying to research, meaning that persistence would be pretty much completely void as without communicating an initial question you cannot persist for an answer, and knowledge of key terminology pairs well with good communication skills, knowledge of key terminology boosts and almost equates to good communication within research and vice-versa.

3.1 - What are BARB, NRS, OFCOM, RAJAR and ASA?

BARB - Broadcaster's Audience Research Board, can be used if you wish to look into the audience statistics for radio stations and television channels.

NRS - National Readership Survey provides audience statistics and demographics for magazine publications and newsbrands throughout the UK.

Ofcom - UK Communications Regulator can provide demographics and monetary statistics about general communications hardware, for example the money spent per annum on laptops or tablets.

RAJAR - Radio Joint Audience Research, infographics about the UK's radio audiences. Provides information such as the average hours spent listening to the radio per user and the amount of adults (18+) that own a DAB radio.

ASA - Advertising Standards Authority, regulates and certifies adverts to make "every UK ad a responsible ad", they monitor whether adverts are ethical, moral and inoffensive. The ASA could help a media producer when creating an advertisement of some sort.

Overall each of these organisations would be useful to a producer, for all different kinds of projects. The amount of these websites you use is contextual to how big your project is, for example if I was creating a short film and advertising it I'd probably want to look at ASA and BARB, however if I was starting a new radio station I'd want to look at RAJAR and BARB mainly. I've found that NRS can be a help in creating a magazine publication however it's quite limited, and very broad. I found that performing my own research in magazine shops or through vox pops provided me with more information and influences my publication more so than the NRS did.

BARB helps provide information for television about demographics of viewers and programme popularity. NRS provide audience research for magazines. RAJAR provide statistics for radio audiences. Ofcom regulate television for instance they'll determine whether a programme should be shown before or after watershed and even whether or not a programme or advert should be deemed too rude for TV. ASA regulate advertisements in The UK on the internet, in newspapers, on television etc., they do the same basic job as Ofcom but for adverts.

I would also pick a subject that is generally well known, or people can spend a lot of time thinking about so that interviewees will give longer and more interesting answers.

Camera Set Up.

I'd use a tripod with the camera to avoid shakiness, a tripod would also make it easier for the interviewer to sit behind the camera, and the adaptability a tripod provides with height would also make it easier for the interviewee's face to be centre frame.

The Sound:

Although with my last vox pop I didn't have the resources to carry this out, I'd use a microphone so that background noise was not so prevalent in the video.

I asked the first question to see if the idea of a tabloid magazine for men or a more masculine tabloid would be an exciting or stupid idea in the eyes of the public. This would benefit me because it would give me an insight as to whether or not the magazine will attract an audience.

The second Question I thought I'd ask to see again if it would attract an audience through means of its novelty factor. If consumers have seen this sort of magazine before, they may not be as attracted to it.

Question three was included just so that I could draw up some statistics about what gender would more likely buy this magazine, it may seem like an obvious answer, it's a man's magazine, however if more women find interest in it, that might tell me that in general, the male population aren't that interested in magazine reading, something I hope to change.

Question four would show me how often the general populace reads magazines, as well as which gender they are, which I can gather from question three. This would again help me draw up statistics.

It was important to do this as it meant we could be prepared for hosting the interviews without making any stupid mistakes. We then chose which of the three activities we'd go out and do today, I did questionnaire and decided to hold it this afternoon in the local town centre. I didn't get enough feedback to create reliable statistics. The people in the town centre were in a rush a lot of the time and wouldn't stop to answer the questionnaire, so I've decided to hand them out in Sawbridgeworth, the town I live in, where most residents aren't in a rush and usually go out in the town for a stroll, I feel like they'd be more inclined to answer my survey. Last week we created prototype magazine covers in InDesign, here's mine:

Today we were to have completed our primary and secondary research and moved onto analysing and designing our magazines based on the research we've collected.

We analysed our primary and secondary research, for my primary research I used Survey monkey to collect an analysis. I had very little results, not enough to produce proper research, so I will need to ensure that I have proper responses by Wednesday. The problem I've had with survey monkey is that I only gathered 2 responses in the space of a week, however my colleague gathered 19 because he used social networking to advertised his questionnaire. An advantage of using survey monkey is that the software automatically creates a research analysis for me to use when designing my magazine

I gathered secondary research from the NRS to learn what kinds of people consume magazines, and how often, this will help me to decide how often my magazine will be published, e.g. weekly, monthly, etc.. I created a mind map for my proposed magazine and added to my previous magazine cover. I must create an introduction and epilogue for my vox pop and focus group videos to inform the audience what my research and publication is about, and to summarise my research in a professional manner. I will gather written questionnaire research in case my survey monkey questions do not produce enough information for me to make an informed decision on how my magazine will be laid out.

-Were types of questions effective at collecting relevant data?

Yes the questions I asked were effective at collecting the data I needed.

-What are the benefits of a professional questionnaire layout?

A professional layout for a questionnaire might make those taking part feel more comfortable with answering questions on it as they might feel like it's more trustworthy.

-How effective are vox pops/ Focus groups?

Vox pops are effective at getting individual opinions that are less detailed and usually answer closed questions. Focus groups are good at hearing the opinions of a group as they discuss different topics or questions.

-How useful is personal confidence?

Personal confidence is a very good trait to have when interviewing people, as it makes it easier to improvise questions, ask people to expand on their answers and take charge when it's necessary to move on to another question.

-How important is organisation?

Organisation is very important when carrying out questionnaires or surveys, as it can help with things like resources.

-Feedback

"Yeah it was good, could do with improvement though, communication is key" - James Frost

-Development

Make questions less vague
