This week marked the beginning of our group recording sessions. We entered the studio with a spark of inspiration and worked on capturing the essence of our ideas through improvisation. Over the course of the session, we recorded four fragments, each with its own unique vibe and varying levels of success. Among them, a track titled “Have Mercy” stood out, inspired by the idea of “showing mercy and not going crazy.” It carried a strong blues influence, which shaped much of the improvisations we worked on, especially the first one.

Improvisation and Recording Process

1.Instrument Focus: Guitar dominated the improvisations, with its dynamic shifts and sudden quiet moments giving the music a strategic and deliberate feel. The interplay between high-energy sections and rapid tempo shifts helped release emotional intensity. For instance, the bass lines were wild and experimental, albeit somewhat chaotic at times, adding an interesting layer to the compositions.

2.Favorite Track Moments: We particularly enjoyed “Have Mercy”, which inspired us to integrate different fragments and expand upon them to form structured songs. Public Image Ltd’s use of repetitive, conversational phrases like “I just want to be loved” influenced our approach, pushing us to explore lyrical themes in our pieces.

Song Development

1.Expanding Fragments: The recordings will serve as the foundation for building full songs. For example, we’re considering using some fragments as intros, then expanding them to create a complete structure.

2.Dynamic Contrast: We experimented with sudden quiet passages, using them as transitional moments or climaxes. This contrast adds depth and narrative to the music, making it feel more cinematic.

Technical Adjustments and Considerations

1.Balancing the Mix: We identified the need to better balance the bass and drums by slightly lowering the bass’s volume and experimenting with creative recording techniques. For example, we’re considering using drum mic spill as a texture to blend with other instruments.

2.Improving Transitions: Smoother transitions between sections are necessary. Dynamics like crescendos or decrescendos could help give the music more shape and cohesion.

3.Theme Exploration: The overarching theme of “order and chaos” emerged through tracks like “Have Mercy,” “Don’t Go Crazy,” and “Suddenly Silent.” These ideas feel interconnected, and developing them further could enhance the project’s unity.

Next Steps

1.Adding Vocals and Keyboards: We’ll discuss incorporating vocal elements and keyboard layers. This will depend on finalizing the instrumental sections first.

2.Collaborative Playlist: To share ideas and inspirations, we’re planning to create a collaborative Spotify playlist with reference tracks.

3.Experimental Recording: Personally, I aim to explore new microphone techniques next week to add unique sonic textures to the project.

Reflections

This week’s recording experience was incredibly rewarding. Everyone brought enthusiasm and energy to the project, and the improvisations felt authentic and full of potential. Moving forward, organizing and refining these ideas will be key to creating cohesive songs. I’m confident that with continued collaboration and experimentation, we’ll produce something truly impactful in the coming weeks.

Week 6 focused on mixing techniques, specifically how to control the mixing console and various studio equipment. We had hands-on sessions in the studio, learning how to use the mixing console, audio interfaces, and effects processors to adjust audio and ensure that each element in the final track is balanced and well represented.

Mixing Techniques and Equipment Usage

1. Mixing Console Operation

We started by learning the basic operations of the mixing console, including volume control, equalization, and panning. We discussed how to use the mixing console to balance the volume levels of different tracks, how to shape the frequency characteristics of sounds with the equalizer (EQ), and how to adjust the panning to place instruments in the stereo field. These foundational techniques allowed us to position each element appropriately within the overall mix.

2. Using Effects Processors

Effects processors play a crucial role in mixing. This week, we learned how to apply various effects, such as reverb, delay, and chorus, to add space and depth to tracks. We explored how to adjust the parameters of each effect and how they influence the atmosphere and emotional expression of the music. For example, when using reverb, we learned how to control its depth and pre-delay to avoid muddying the sound.

3. Audio Interface and Equipment Connections

We also learned about using audio interfaces, including how to connect various devices (such as microphones, guitars, and keyboards) to the audio interface and interact with the mixing console or Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). We explored the functions of different interface ports, such as input and output connections, and how to ensure signal clarity and stability through proper cabling.

Practical Exercises

We had some hands-on practice in the studio, where we directly controlled the mixing console and applied the techniques we learned. During the mixing process, we adjusted the equalization, added effects, and worked on the dynamic range of tracks to progressively enhance each one. This allowed us to start understanding the artistic and technical aspects of mixing, and how to present each element in the mix optimally.

Next Steps

1.Continue Mixing Practice: I plan to continue practicing on the mixing console, focusing on balancing different instruments and adding more layers of effects.

2.Refine Mixing Skills: We will further explore how to fine-tune the details of each track, especially controlling the dynamic range and making precise audio adjustments.

3.Experiment and Innovate: I hope to experiment with new mixing techniques and further develop my skills, particularly in controlling spatial depth and layering in the mix.

Reflections

This week’s learning gave me a deeper understanding of mixing. Through hands-on practice, I realized that mixing is not just a technical adjustment, but also an artistic process. Every detail we tweak can have a significant impact on the final outcome. Learning how to master these details and create a balanced, expressive track will be my focus in the coming weeks.

In Week 7, I read 《Preparing for Mastering》, which focuses on how to prepare mixes for mastering. It emphasizes the collaborative relationship between mixing engineers and mastering engineers to ensure the final product achieves the best possible outcome. The book outlines various technical and creative aspects of the mastering process, providing a roadmap for how to optimize a mix for different platforms and audiences. Additionally, I explored 《Recommendations for Loudness of Internet Audio Streaming and On-Demand Distribution》, which offers guidelines for standardizing loudness levels in digital audio to maintain consistent audio quality across various streaming services.

Key Learnings from 《Preparing for Mastering》

1. Purpose of Mastering

The goal of mastering is to optimize the mix for its intended audience and platform (e.g., vinyl, broadcast, streaming) by ensuring frequency balance, dynamic range, and stereo imaging align with the expected listening experience. Mastering helps the final mix translate well across different media formats and devices.

Conclusion

Mastering aims to enhance a well-crafted mix, ensuring it translates well across various platforms and audiences. Clear communication, thorough preparation, and an understanding of loudness normalization standards are key to successful mastering.

Key Insights from《Recommendations for Loudness of Internet Audio Streaming and On-Demand Distribution》

Key Points

1.Consistent loudness targets should be implemented: speech at -18 LUFS and music at -16 LUFS.

2.True peak limiting should be applied to prevent distortion.

3.Loudness and dynamic range metadata support offers flexibility in future audio distribution, enhancing user control over loudness and dynamic range.

This document provides practical solutions to ensure consistency across platforms, reduce listener fatigue, and enhance the listening experience for all types of content.

Reflections

Theory has provided a foundation and framework for our group project, helping me gain a deeper understanding of the related concepts and processes. In the context of music production and mastering, theory not only explains various mixing techniques, dynamic range control, and loudness normalization, but also demonstrates how these theories can be applied to optimize audio quality and achieve artistic expression. Through theory, I am able to better understand how different techniques impact the final audio result and provide targeted guidance for practical operations.

Practice has, to some extent, confirmed the theory, but it has also revealed some practical challenges not considered in theory. For example, while theory emphasizes the importance of loudness normalization and dynamic range control in mixing, in practice, adjustments often need to be made based on the specific audio content and the production goals. Some theoretical concepts are meaningful in theory but may show slight discrepancies in different playback devices or environments, requiring ongoing refinement and adjustment in practice.

This week, I reimagine a solo project based on the group project created earlier. Inspired by 《The Practice of Music Production，Context》of Jake Williams’ lecture, I focused on the cultural and social context of music and its impact on the audience.

Initially, I selected a few segments from the group demo and rearranged them to integrate a more distinct cultural background and social theme.

During the experimentation phase, I adjusted the song structure and style to enhance its narrative. To support this process, I collaborated with:

1.A guitarist who named Triple Z to record more emotionally expressive melodic sections.

2.A DAW operator named Alex to optimize the sound design of MIDI parts.

3.A mixing engineer named James to fuse the tracks into a cohesive soundscape.

Throughout this phase, we repeatedly refined the rhythm and dynamics of the song to align with the contextualization goals.

Successes:

1. During the mixing process, effective use of dynamic range control (DRC) ensured clarity across various volume levels.

2. Experimented with a new microphone placement technique, achieving a spatial and three-dimensional effect for the guitar recordings.

3. Mastering techniques were applied to ensure the track met streaming platforms’ LUFS standards (-16 LUFS).

Challenges and Failures:

1. During experimentation with bass synthesizers, overly low frequencies disrupted the balance between tracks. This was resolved by applying frequency cutting techniques.

2. Some harmonic sound designs were overly complex and clashed with the style of the main melody. After multiple attempts, a more minimalist approach was adopted to achieve coherence.

Theoretical Support:

1.The concept of Musicking highlighted that music is not just a creative product but also a social activity. This inspired me to incorporate cultural and social contexts into the work, fostering a deeper connection with the audience.

2.The experimental approach of post-punk provided insights into adopting unconventional structures and addressing social issues, enhancing the piece’s critical and artistic dimensions.

Support from Secondary Sources:

1. Inspired by Public Image Ltd, I experimented with using short, punchy lyrical phrases to enhance the immediacy and impact of the song.

2. Research into genres like Techno and Baile Funk highlighted how music can respond to social and cultural contexts, which directly influenced the thematic direction of my work.

This week’s learning and practice provided me with a deeper understanding of the concept of contextualization in music production.

This week, I focused on the process of sound sampling and modification. I began by selecting various field recordings and sound samples, including environmental sounds and musical fragments from previous works. My goal was to transform these samples into creative and unique sounds while maintaining their original energy.

I experimented with a range of sound processing techniques, such as pitch shifting, time stretching, adding reverb, and distortion effects. The aim was to reshape these samples to match the atmosphere of the track. I also incorporated distortion and ambient sounds to add layers and texture.

Challenges:

Some samples, particularly those recorded in uncontrolled environments, contained excessive noise or undesirable audio imperfections. I had to use EQ, filters, and noise reduction techniques to clean these sounds. Additionally, during time-stretching experiments, some samples became unnatural, so I needed to adjust the settings to preserve the integrity of the original recording.

Successful Aspects:

1. Pitch Shifting and Time Stretching: These techniques successfully transformed the original samples without losing their essence. I used these methods to create rhythmic elements and environmental textures.

2. Sound Layering: By layering different samples, I created a rich, full texture that added depth to the track.

Challenges and Failures:

1. Unwanted Noise: Some of the field-recorded samples had background noise, and while I used noise reduction, there were still slight imperfections in the final mix. I had to be cautious to avoid losing the quality of the sound during the cleaning process.

2. Time Stretching Issues: When I overused time-stretching on some samples, they began to sound unnatural. To resolve this, I had to carefully adjust the time-stretching settings and add more effects to smooth the transitions.

Theoretical Support:

1.Sampling as a Creative Process: The course emphasized viewing sampling as a tool for creation rather than just a way to recycle sounds. This aligned perfectly with my approach, as I aimed to transform the samples into original, contextually relevant elements for the project.

2.Cultural Context of Sampling: I also studied the cultural impact of sampling in various music genres, particularly in hip-hop and electronic music, where sampling plays a key role in shaping the sound and identity of the music.

Through experimentation, I learned how different sampling techniques impact the final sound. For example, by using more aggressive pitch shifts, I was able to create tension within the track, which aligned with the theme of my project.I also found that layering multiple samples effectively is a good way to build complexity and interest, adding depth to the final piece.

Secondary Practice Information:

1. Glitch Music: I explored glitch music and sound manipulation techniques, which inspired me to try granular synthesis and stutter effects, adding a more experimental edge to my work.

2. Sampling in Electronic Music: I researched how artists like The Avalanches and J Dilla use sampling to create unique works. This influenced how I blended samples with original elements, resulting in a new, hybrid sound.

Audience Testing and Feedback:

I played a version with processed samples to a few friends familiar with experimental music. They gave positive feedback on the use of sound textures, particularly how the samples transformed into unique atmospheres. However, some listeners suggested adding more melodic elements to make the piece more accessible.

This week, focusing on sound sampling and modification allowed me to explore new techniques and deepened my understanding of how to creatively manipulate sounds. Moving forward, I plan to:

1. Continue experimenting with more complex sound design techniques, such as granular synthesis, to further shape the atmosphere of the piece.

2. Based on feedback, I will incorporate more melodic elements to achieve better balance, retaining the experimental aspect while making the track more listenable.

3. Refine the mix and prepare it for mastering, paying special attention to the interaction between processed samples and other instruments.

I believe the work done this week has taken my project in a new direction, and I look forward to further refining it in the coming weeks.

This week focused on mixing a remix of a previously created track. I started by carefully analyzing the original version to identify the key elements that would be the foundation of the remix. I aimed to add a new flavor while maintaining the essence of the original track. This involved selecting parts of the original stems, such as vocals and instrumental elements, and reworking them with new sounds and effects.

As I began the remixing process, I played around with different drum patterns, basslines, and synths to create a more modern, energetic feel. I experimented with different effects, such as reverb, delay, and EQ, to create space and atmosphere. The challenge was to ensure that the remix retained the original track’s vibe while sounding fresh and exciting.

Challenges:

During the process, I encountered some challenges with balancing the new elements with the original track. The vocals, in particular, were tricky to blend with the new beats and synths. I had to carefully adjust EQ and apply effects to ensure they sat well in the mix. Additionally, the energy of the original track was high, and I had to make sure the remix didn’t lose that intensity.

Final Outcome:

The final mix successfully blended the original elements with the new ones. The remix maintained the energy of the original track while introducing new dynamics. I was happy with how the drums and bass sounded, as they gave the track a solid foundation, and the synths added a futuristic feel. The final track was more dynamic, with the remixed vocals now sitting perfectly in the mix.

Successful Aspects:

1. Creative Use of Effects: I used effects such as sidechain compression and reverb to create space and depth in the track. These worked well, especially on the synths and bass, which allowed them to breathe and sit more comfortably in the mix.

2. EQ and Balance: Carefully adjusting the EQ on the vocals and instrumental elements helped to make sure that everything fit together without clashing. The bass was tightened, and the mids were adjusted to avoid muddiness.

Challenges and Failures:

1. Vocal Blending: One of the challenges was getting the vocals to blend smoothly with the new, energetic instrumental parts. At first, they felt a bit disconnected from the remix’s vibe. I had to experiment with time-stretching and reverb to place them in the right context.

2. Maintaining Energy: It was difficult to maintain the high energy of the original track while introducing more complex elements. I had to carefully work on the arrangement, keeping the track moving forward while adding interest without losing intensity.

Theoretical Support:

Remixing as Creative Reinterpretation: The theory behind remixing emphasizes that a remix is not just a reworking of the original track but a creative reinterpretation that can introduce new perspectives. This theory aligned well with my approach, as I aimed to transform the original track into something fresh and unique while still respecting its core essence.

Research on professional mixing techniques, especially in remixing, was crucial. I studied how experienced mixers balance new and old elements, maintain clarity, and use effects to enhance the remix’s energy without overpowering the original components.

Secondary Practice Information:

1. Professional Remixes: I listened to remixes by artists like Calvin Harris and David Guetta, who are known for their ability to merge original and new elements seamlessly. This gave me inspiration for how to approach my remix, balancing energy, rhythm, and atmosphere.

2. Studying other remixes helped me understand how they structure their tracks, with emphasis on breakdowns, drops, and build-ups to maintain interest and energy.

Other Relevant Materials Used Throughout the Process

Audience Testing and Feedback:

I shared the remix with a few people familiar with the original track and received feedback about the remix’s energy. They liked how the new instrumental parts added a different vibe while still keeping the energy of the original. However, some suggested adjusting the breakdown section to make the transition smoother.

Branding and Audience Engagement:

Since the remix takes a more modern, energetic approach. This will appeal to a younger audience and club goers who enjoy upbeat, high-energy music. I plan to create a marketing campaign focusing on this new direction, including visual content that reflects the remix’s vibe.

This week, the process of mixing the remix allowed me to experiment with new techniques and tools. Moving forward, I plan to:

1. Refine the transitions in the remix, especially around the breakdown sections, to ensure smoother flow between different parts.

2. Continue experimenting with sound design, particularly the use of dynamic changes in the mix to build tension and release.

I’m pleased with the progress made so far and am excited to continue refining the track in the coming weeks.

The goal for this week was to complete the final recording and editing of my track. Based on the work from previous weeks, I decided to revisit the overall sound design and refine it further. Before the final recording, I checked all the tracks, effects, and mixes to ensure that every element was seamlessly integrated.

As I moved into the recording phase, I did a final check on all the recording equipment and setups. Ensuring the microphones, audio interfaces, and recording environment were optimized for the best sound quality. During the recording process, I paid close attention to the recording quality, making sure there was no unwanted noise or background interference. The vocals and instruments were re-recorded and optimized to ensure they blended well with the mix.

Challenges:

1. Sound Consistency: Some of the elements in the previous mix were slightly inconsistent with the newly recorded parts. I had to make small adjustments to the existing tracks to ensure they fit perfectly with the new recordings.

2. Effect Adjustments: During the final editing process, I revisited the effects, especially reverb and delay. I made subtle tweaks to these effects to ensure they enhanced the track without overwhelming the clarity.

Technical and Experimentation Insights

Successes:

1. Recording Quality: The final recording quality was excellent. Through careful checks of my equipment setup, I successfully eliminated any unwanted noise, ensuring clarity in every track.

2. Effect Processing: The use of effects such as reverb and delay was optimized to add depth and space to the track without compromising clarity.

Challenges and Failures:

1. Track Balance: Some of the recorded tracks needed further tweaks in the mix to ensure a good volume and frequency balance with the other elements.

2. Time Constraints: During the final recording and editing phase, I faced some time pressure. While I paid close attention to detail, certain small changes had to be deferred to a later version.

Theoretical Support from “Preparing for Mastering”:

In this week’s recording and editing process, I applied key concepts from Preparing for Mastering, specifically the importance of achieving a well-balanced mix that can be enhanced during the mastering phase. The book emphasizes that a good mix allows the mastering engineer to focus on enhancing the sound rather than fixing issues, a concept that aligned perfectly with my approach this week. By ensuring the clarity and balance of my tracks, I minimized the need for major adjustments during the mastering process.

Another key point from the book was the importance of loudness standards in modern music production, especially for digital platforms. The idea that dynamic range and frequency balance are more important than sheer loudness (as discussed in the book’s section on loudness normalization) influenced my final edits. I paid particular attention to keeping the dynamic range intact while ensuring the track’s loudness met industry standards (e.g., -16 LUFS for music tracks on streaming platforms).

Secondary Practical Insights:

1. Use of Loudness Standards: Referring to the loudness guidelines in the 《Recommendations for Loudness of Internet Audio Streaming and On-Demand Distribution》, I ensured that my track adhered to the necessary LUFS levels. By measuring loudness and avoiding clipping, I ensured that the track would be optimized for platforms like Spotify and iTunes, just as the book recommends.

2. Balance of Clarity and Effects: I studied various renowned mixers and their techniques for balancing sound and using effects. Their strategies helped me understand how to use effects to enhance the spatiality and dynamics of the track without losing clarity.

1.Audience Testing and Feedback:

During the final editing process, I shared a draft version of the track with a few trusted listeners. The feedback was generally positive, with listeners particularly enjoying the clarity of the vocals and the depth of the overall mix. The only suggestion was to increase the sense of space, especially in the chorus. I decided to add more reverb in the final version to address this.

2.Considerations for Future Consumption Patterns:

Given the modern style of the track’s mix, I considered its performance across different consumption platforms, particularly digital streaming and radio. I ensured that the final version met the technical requirements in terms of volume, loudness, and quality for these platforms.

3.Branding and Audience Interaction:

As I planned to release the track, I considered promoting it through both visual and auditory channels. To attract the target audience, I also planned to create short videos and social media content to accompany the release.

This week’s final recording and editing process gave me the opportunity to refine the track in detail. Moving forward, I plan to make final adjustments. After receiving feedback from the team, I will make final tweaks to the volume balance and effects.

I am satisfied with the progress made this week and look forward to completing the final version.
