In 1993 Dr. Rueben Matalon discovered the gene that causes Canavan from tissues provided by several other Canavan families. This discovery led to carrier screening and prenatal testing for the disease

There is a two-in-four chance of passing one mutated gene and a one-in-four chance that the child will have two fully functioning genes and be neither a carrier or be affected by the disease.
