Day 1: Students are given minimal guidance and asked to write a narrative (this will give teachers a gauge for where students are at in writing).
Day 2: Students look at texts and determine if a text is narrative or not. The elements of a narrative are discussed.
Day 3: The narrative checklist is introduced. Students evaluate each others narratives using the checklist.
Day 4: Students are introduced to the graphic organizer and begin using it.
Day 5: Students review the graphic organizer and work in groups to write a paragraph on a whole-class narrative. The teacher guides the class to write a conclusion.

Week 1 is the introduction to narrative writing. It starts by giving the students a chance to simply write and recall what they learned the previous year, and as the week progresses, students are consistently exposed to and given opportunities to practice using the narrative checklist.

Students are completing narrative writings in the form of a mystery to connect to their shared reading story (Steal Away Home). Students begin by working with an example of a mystery and reviewing the checklist to ensure they are ready to include the parts in the writing they will need. The lessons are structured to take students through the process from introduction, middle, and conclusion. As they work through this, specific lessons focus on having students revise their work to build tension, add dialogue, create cliffhangers, and use interesting words in their stories. Students continue to review the checklist and go through the steps of their writing.

The lessons are structured to allow for multiple examples of modeling with mystery narrative texts and then guide students step-by-step through each individual piece the narrative requires. Students work on building the main writing (BME) as well as adding components to it that are specific to mystery narratives (tension/cliffhangers).
