Historical data biases significantly impact AI decisions by perpetuating existing inequalities. AI systems trained on biased historical data can reinforce discriminatory patterns in areas like hiring, lending, and criminal justice, leading to unfair outcomes for marginalized groups.

Historical databases on the internet may negatively impact AI generated information. Historical data may outdated, including information on race, culture, gender, socioeconomic status, and other characteristics that are present among diverse peoples. When AI uses this information to generate responses, the inaccurate and biased information in the internet may be included in the response. This is concerning because it may encourage biased belief systems among its users.

Historical data biases used by AI could continue to reflect bias and stereotypes. Data can be used to interpret and based on the goal/focus of the person collecting the data, it make be skewed. Although it may be correct data, it may not be all encompassing to take underrepresented groups into consideration. AI is only as good as the data and information that it is provided. Also, I feel the way a question is asked could impact the response. Therefore, if I do not ask the question in a specific way, it may affect the AI responses.

AI does not contextualize data within the historical and socio-cultural environment in which it was collected, nor does it account for the human biases and power imbalances that could skew and influence historical data. For instance, data collected during the Jim Crow era would be heavily distorted and discriminatory due to the racial injustices occurring at that time. AI is drawing on data collected by humans, and algorithms designed by humans, and so its decisions and analyses are not immune from human biases. Consequently, AI algorithms can serve to reflect and perpetuate historical and social biases.

Since AI primarily functions by detecting and replicating patterns, it will also replicate bias if it's present in the data it has scanned. Since everyone has at least some biases, it's very difficult to give AI a dataset that's completely free of biases, making it almost impossible to create an AI that's truly unbiased. For example, people with Arabic-sounding names have to submit 64% more job applications before getting a job compared to white people. Most other ethnic groups are affected too. So if the AI detects this pattern, it can automatically rule out applicants with Arabic-sounding names simply because it's been done before.
