After we chose what we wanted to make, we brainstormed on different things we could make. Some ideas we came up with were:
- A pyramid half built. Our lifting device would finish building the pyramid.
- A watering well- the lifting device would be carrying the bucket up and down the well.

The final idea is the idea we decided to do. We thought about any children's toys that contain lifting devices. We established the idea of building an elevator for a toy car, like toy car parks would have. The lifting device part of it would be how we get elevator to rise and fall. We used a pulley system for this.

There were two stages in making our lifting device. The first stage was making the frame. We started by cutting strips of timber to the following measurements.
Four 360mm Lengths
Four 100mm Lengths
One 85mm Lengths
Two 127mm Lengths
One 130mm X 130mm plywood(This later had to be changed to 150mm X 150mm as the 130mm by 130mm was too small for the roof of the frame.)

Firstly we started by getting two 100mm Lengths and put them down on the table horizontally. We then got two 360mm Lengths and placed them sideways onto the 100mm Lengths to make an even rectangle. We then got a nail gun and nailed the timber together so that the timber wouldn't fall apart. We repeated this process with the remaining two 360mm Lengths and two 100mm Lengths and made another rectangle. We then got the two 127mm pieces of timber and we placed them horizontally apart. We then put both rectangle pieces of timber onto the two pieces of 127mm timber ensuring that each rectangular piece touched both 127mm pieces of timber and that the base of the frame formed a rectangular shape. We then nailed the pieces of timber so that the frames could stand up on its own. We then got the 185mm piece of timber and went to the back of the frame and nailed it to the upper back wall of the frame. We then got the plywood and placed it on top of the frame and nailed it to the frame. This was the first stage of making the lift and with the frame now finished we could move onto the pulley's.

The lift has three closed sides with one open end at the front. The sides were glued down with double flaps to give the structure more strength and durability.
A strip of cardboard goes across the centre of the lift and is stuck down with glue to both sides. This will be attached to the pulley system and is essential for lifting the lift structure up and down.

The lift which is raised up and down by the pulley system is just made from cardboard. One of the members of our team brought in cardboard from her workplace and we made the lift from this. We had to find cardboard that would be strong enough to be pulled up and down by the pulley but also light enough to be lifted up and down with an object in it. We decided to use cardboard because we thought it would be better than wood or plywood as it is lighter.

In conclusion, we designed a lifting device using a pulley system. It was a long process, but as a group we are happy with the finished product. The process involved exploring, making, designing and evaluating. We explored what different devices we could make, we made our chosen idea, we drew some designs on how to attach the pulleys. Finally, we evaluated our progress by writing about what went well and what did not go well throughout the process.

Our final device is one that we are happy to have made.
