Let’s say at a specific point in time you do something extraordinary that makes you experience a reasonable amount of joy. Say you win a race. The intensity of the feeling of joy that you experience winning the race fades as time goes by, and twenty years later, if you happen to be reminded of that joyous occasion, you may only feel mildly good, or even slightly amused. Let’s imagine that a few days after the race, you pass an test with very good grades you feel proud of that fact. This feeling of pride also diminishes as time goes by, because the relevance of winning this race is superseded by new races or further tests or even other interests, whatever the case may be. You will always remember, with pride, that you obtained the good grade, but the intensity of the feeling will somehow be diminished and not equal to the original instant. Over time you do various things with varying degrees of success ,and importantly, some things maybe with varying degrees of joyousness, or even disappointment, the emotional intensity of which all diminish at varying rates, depending on the ‘value’ of the original emotion experienced. It is even possible that some of these ‘emotion values’ might be increasing in value, for instance the love that one might feel towards another person. As it happens, we all broadcast, in a way, the state of happiness that we are experiencing, all of the time, since our minds are reading and evaluating these ‘values of emotion’, sufficiently to monitor our actions in an effort to keep us happy … well … happy enough.
