You've Got a Friend in Me (Post-ish Pandemic) - Second Grade by

After our world was turned upside down from a nationwide pandemic, students are finally returning to the classroom once again. For potentially the first time in over a year, our students are facing situations where they are interacting with other students on a daily basis. This is a difficult situation to be in, especially when mask mandates are not going away any time soon. Students are using this unit to determine the best ways to interact with peers and build friendships that will last for the duration of the school year, if not longer.

Students will receive a worksheet that requires them to find a partner for each of the math problems on the page. The math problems will look something like "You and a partner do 10 + 5 jumping jacks." Each partner will introduce themselves, work together to determine and write down the answer to the given problem, and then perform the exercise based on their answers. Once they complete a problem with its corresponding exercise, the students will sign each others papers, signifying who they worked with. Each problem will require a different partner until every problem is complete.

The second grade students will be given a fourth grade student pen-pal by random. The second grade students will start by writing the fourth grade students a letter that introduces themselves, their hobbies, favorites, interests, family, etc. and any questions that they might have for their pen-pal. The fourth grade students will respond the following week with an autobiographical letter and any answers they have to questions that were asked. Eventually, the letters will become less formal as students get to know their pen-pals through their writing each week. The topics of the letters will shift based on the students' responses since they will not be required to write about certain topics each week. Meetings between the two classes will be planned throughout the year so that the second grade students can get to know an older student who they can look up to in their school.

I will read the story, "The Crayon Box that Talked" by Shane Derolf aloud to the class. The book focuses on each color of the crayon box and how each one has its purpose. The crayons realize that everyone is unique in their own ways, but when they come together, they see the great things they can accomplish with their colors. Students will learn that despite their differences, they can come together to bring out the best in one another. With this book, students will create a flower petal that will make up a giant flower on one of our classroom bulletin boards. Their flower petals can contain anything they want, as long as it represents themselves. They can use markers, crayons, colored pencils, etc. to complete this activity. Students will see that each of their petals is needed to make the flower complete.

Source: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/487514728412533146/

Each group will participate in mock Olympics Games such as basketball, soccer, relay races, and a team building obstacle course. Students will compete against other groups for each activity and they will learn how to become a team and practice good sportsmanship. They will have to work together to see how they can succeed in each activity, and the groups are randomized so students can build new friendships from their teammates.
