A minivan slowly inches forward to my right. It’s a deep gray that seems to reflect the mood of the middle aged woman driving. Her hair is kept in a messy bun well known to mothers and her right hand taps impatiently against the steering wheel. I can barely make out the outline of sports equipment bags in the tinted back windows. Yet contained inside of them are not shin guards and baseball bats. It’s her husband, limbs twisted and contorted and cut in places so that he fits in three bags. The smell is beginning to get to her, the iron of blood coats everything and she worries that it will never come out. She cannot open the windows though, cannot risk the stretch traveling and alerting me or the people around her. She needs the traffic to lighten up, she still has to dispose of the body before thoroughly cleaning the car and the sports bags, later picking up the kids from school and driving them to various activities. Buried in a shallow ditch her husband will be just as helpful as he was before.

“Do you have the money?” Came the worn voice, tired with giving orders.

“Yeah yeah. I have it all right here.” A wiry frame thrust forward a wad of cash kept together with a rubber band.

“If I count it right now, is it all going to be there?” Another man beside the first spoke, slightly shorter and wrapped up in a worn denim jacket.

“Yes sir, I mean yes. Yes, all the money is right there.”

“Let him off the hook.” The first man spoke again.

“We should probably do that with Johnny too.” The shorter man said before both laughed heartily. “Want to see what happens to people who try to scam us?” It wasn’t really a question, but the nervous buyer nodded anyway.

The second man turned around to shine his flashlight further into the dark room. The young man was relieved for a second to no longer be under the criminal’s scruntanty, but sucked in a breath as the flashlight landed on its target.

Suspended only two feet off the ground a man hung by a hook pierced through his mouth and out his chin.

There was a cold mist that wrapped around the frozen over lake that day. The forest had gone through the winter and was thawing out, however the snowy mountains and silver lake had other ideas. They remained cold for much longer than the forest did, but eventually they too changed with the seasons. I crouched, picking up one of the smooth, oval shaped rocks that cluttered the shore of the lake. The sun was at just the right angle that the lake appeared to be glowing gold from within. Twisting my arm back and letting the rock fly through the air, I held my breath. The stones' impact with the ice sounded like a rounded out bird song, starting loud and extended before becoming softer and quicker with each touch of the ice.

Edward Remington lied on the dew-covered field that the field mice would see as home. As he stared at the wide blue yonder that truly seemed to go on forever, the birds effortlessly glided from tree to tree surrounding him. In this corrupt world, the golden tree meadow was one of the few places Edward could find peace, even though it was bug-filled, and the grass was unruly and overgrown. After what seemed like hours of tranquility and quiet, Edward heard a slight clicking on the dirt road slowly getting louder and louder. Horses. He crawled on all fours to hide, leaving a print in the grass with flattened flowers under where he had lied. He went behind this boulder in which there were crickets spilling from every crack, and sage-colored lichen had taken over the gravely color that once was. As the noise grew louder, Edward held his breath and peeked out.

“Edward where are you?” Daphne shouted in fear that Edward had been taken.

Edward jumped out from behind the rock, embarrassed that he was hiding from his little sister. As he approached their carriage, Daphne’s expression shifted from fear to disgust, then to enthusiasm.

“What’s wrong?” Edward asked. He looked behind him, thinking maybe she wasn’t looking at him. To his surprise, Daphne started backing away from him.

	“Seriously Daphne, what is it.”

“Please stay calm, but you are covered from head to toe in crickets right now.”

Edward peeked down at his cream-colored button-up, only to see it sullied with crickets, chirping intensely. Edward screamed, and dropped to the ground, patting himself while rolling in circles on the dusty road.

“Mama and I are on our way to the market.” Their mother peaked out of the back of the carriage. “Would you care to join us on our venture?”

“You know what, I’d be delighted to. Anything to get me away from here.”

Edward hopped up into the carriage, and off they went down the bumpy dirt road. The market was busy today, as it is strawberry picking season, and this place is known for its fresh produce. At the market, Daphne was forced to be accompanied by someone which infuriated her greatly, but Edward enjoyed it. They argued about where to go because Edward wanted sweets and pastries, but Daphne wanted fruit. Their dispute went on for minutes until they decided to have fruit, then sweets, with the logic that the sweets could be like dessert for them. Their outing consisted of laughs, arguing, and eating. Edward wouldn’t want it any other way.

A woman who lives in a New York City penthouse has the whole top floor to herself. Making herself a cup of coffee before she has to leave for work; she owns one of the wealthiest businesses in NYC for construction. Rushing out of the penthouse she gets in her limo and drives 7 blocks to her work. Meanwhile while she is rushing for work she sees a family with a son and a daughter that look like they are around 7 or 8 years old. The mother carried groceries for breakfast. The family lets the business woman let her go infront of them but the business woman doesn't even say thank you and ignores the family while walking into the building. The next day everything repeats and still the woman doesn't even say thank you for letting the family go. Time goes on, and the family goes back to the store for dinner and the business woman crashes into them and gets furious with the family and her words out of her mouth were not nice and the mother comforts her children that are scared. The woman with the children says to the angry business woman and tells her that she flipped off her children for no reason and told her that she didn't see her coming and that she apologized. The business woman scoffed and went into her limo to head back home. In the car, the lady started to think about what she had done and felt terrible. She wanted to do something nice to the family as an apology. The next morning everything happens over and over again and the lady does not see the family walking to the store, the business woman waits for some time seeing if the family will come or not. Waiting for almost an hour there is still no sign of the family. She waits until late evening around the sametime she gets mad at the family. The next morning goes by and there's still no sign of the family. She gets worried and has her security guards go find them and bring them back to her office. Three days go by and there is still no sign of them, she gets more worried and goes to the police. The police knew exactly what the business lady was talking about and told her that they had been kicked out of their apartment and cannot disclose any further information. She asked if the police knew where they were and pointed south towards her penthouse. The woman immediately went in her limo and tried looking for them, she ended up finding them walking her way. She ran up to them and apologized for everything she had caused and even said I'm sorry if she had caused them to get kicked out. The mother accepted her apology and that's when the business woman had offered an apartment on 29 boulevard and had offered to pay rent and that there would be food and they would be taken care of. The family cried with joy and hugged the business woman and said “how can we ever repay you” and the business woman said back to the family to keep being humble and kind wherever you go.

Abraham and William had sat in for the night at their lodge overlooking the main square. Past the hour of 9:00pm there was no activity to be heard of down on the cobblestone streets. In the room there were two arm chairs that supported the two friends as they conversed by the stone hearth.

“You have to tell her, it wouldn’t be right not to”, Abraham insisted.

“I have not the know how to dear friend, I have loved Elizabeth since the fall of the war, nearly years ago, I could not bring myself to be her bearer of bad tidings at such a irksome hour”, William rubbed his head and gazed into the orange eyes of the warm fire.

“It is her own brother William, if you let her believe everything is alright when the truth does come to light she will then of course only have you to blame, and by then you will simply have to rely on your love alone and that does not always endure through the tides of a closely related

family death fair gentleman”.

“I understand that, I understand that and much more the fact that George’s death was my fault”

“Well now that is simple rubbish young lad, you yourself did not slay George, the beasts of the hollow did, tis’ a tragedy of fate, that is what it was and that is what you must realize it to be.”

Deep down William wanted to believe he was innocent, he wanted to understand that he in fact did not kill young, poor George. What could not sit in his head well enough to be left alone was the fact that he froze. He watched the dark woods entrance this boy, just as he watched the black demon beasts with gnashing teeth tear him limb from limb. A massacre that he could only behold as a regretful witness, and not the hero.

Everyone in the town knew from simple legend not to travel to the northern boundary. The woods there were an undefeated foe that had swallowed many into death. It was always dark and cold. A hopeless scape of misery and dispear, and if you did not die from suffering of condition, the slow, torturous, painful death that awaited you made the prior choice that of a cool drink on a hot day. The beasts of the hollow were not to be deem illusions. They hunted like men, with the hunger of beasts. The pack could not be dismantled with an arrow or a bullet, nor the mobs that attempted to raid the woods years earlier. The same mob never returned to town.

Vada is the type of girl to whisper to her friends about your shirt being on backwards before loudly stating so to everyone in the girls locker room. Unlike her namesake, Vada Sultenfuss from the movie My Girl, an ambitious, charismatic, and kind person, Vada Morrison was cold, and loved chaos. Three years ago her dad passed and she became a different person, we used to be friends and she was funny, and kind of shy even. She was turning 11 that summer and we were starting 6th grade in a few months, when her dad was in a fatal car accident. She was a daddy's girl, through and through, without a doubt. Her mother was a former beauty queen and whenever I went over to her house she would tell me I should go into pageants.

“...And then I missed my period, and then again, and again..” She sighed. “And I knew I couldn't stay in the running pregnant.. And couldn't continue after I had a child.” I looked over at Vada, she was bored. I had heard the story every time I was over the house so I could only imagine how many times she had heard it. Vada had this sorry look in her eyes, she looked like she was apologizing for the 1000th time. Her face always said, I said I'm sorry, I didn't ask to be born. I could sense the dynamic of Vada and her mother even at a young age even if I didn't understand it.

I remember the day it happened, we were laying on our sides rolling down the grassy hill at the end of her road, excited to start middle school. Our moms were going to take us back to school shopping in a few weeks and I was getting my braces put on in a few days. Her mom ran outside holding her phone to her ear with her shoulder getting in the car, she yelled at us to go to Jackies, Jackie was Vadas next door neighbor, an elderly woman with no kids and a small yappy dog.

It was late, the air was hot and my sunburn was sore. I was up, waiting for him to call. We had been talking for a few nights that summer. I layed and waited until he finally called. I sat up and I fixed my hair before I pressed the answer button. He had asked me how my day was. Funny the way he can make you feel amazing one moment and then crush your soul the next, but i never knew this. How would I? I sat there most of the night, on the phone with him. He made it worth the while. As I layed there just talking about life I noticed. He was hurt, the way he talked and explained his past relationships. Someone hurt him. Now that I reflect on it I hurt him too, probably more than he didn't to me. And it hurts everyday when i think about one stupid mistake ended it all. But I will never forget that night. He never showed any feelings and rare signs of pure affection but something in him that night I saw a part of him I never thought I'd get to see.
