The rabbit granatensis

Name of the hare in English:

hare - hare

lepus granatensis [Latin] - the rabbit granatensis

Scientific name:

lepus granatensis

Common name:

hare

Characteristics [species basis]:

European hares change their behavior in the spring: they can be seen, throughout the day, chasing after others of their species in the prairies. This can be seen as a dispute between males of this species in order to attain leadership. In these disputes, one can often see fights, one striking the other with their paws.

But a more detailed observation revealed that it is usually a female hare that ends up beating a male, in order to show that it is not yet ready for reproduction or simply to show its determination.

The hare's diet is very similar to that of the rabbit. One of the differences between hares and rabbits is the fact that hare chicks are born with small motor and visual abilities, while rabbit hatchlings are born completely blind and stay in the nest for a few weeks until they can go out on their own.

Hare's nests are shallow holes or flattened areas in the grass, unlike rabbits, which make them into holes in the ground.

Due to hunting, the number of hares in the wild decreased by approximately 30% in the last 10 years. Your skin is sold to make rugs or simply for decoration and your flesh is much appreciated. Nonetheless, non-governmental organizations succeeded in reducing hunting and allowing hares to move freely in larger areas.

Currently, hares are scattered throughout most of Europe, America and in some countries in Africa and Asia. In the Southern Region of Brazil it is common to see hares on farms, especially in areas of bush and in the morning.

Some species:

Lepus europaeus

Lepus granatensis

Lepus castroviejoi
