First of all, I chose the word “despair” to describe my poem because from what I have learned over the past few weeks on the videos and the book, this really does capture the feelings and emotions that the Jews were feeling at this horrific time. In the first part of my poem, I wanted to describe that “what is going on” feeling. This was when the Jews were being hated on and when really bad things started to occur to the Jews like getting beat up by a nazi. I’m the second part of my poem, my goal was to choose the best words to show that the Jews now know what is going on and that there was no hope. At this point in time, families were being torn away from each other just like that. People’s feeling ma and emotions were overflowing with sadness and weakness over time. People started to starve, conditions were horrible, and this was all being done without a sense of sorrow inside. Knowing that this was just the beginning of the worst, I was trying to describe this point in time. The third part of my poem was by far the hardest to write purely because of the emotions that come to me after thinking about the way people were treated. This part describes the actual deaths and murders themselves. Quotes like “this is a mad mans hell” were used in this part because it really does accurately describe the current scenes of the past. This describes the people in the ovens as all of the burning, screaming, crying for help, starving, and suffering. This is the part that brings me, and I’m sure most other people down. Just thinking about the conditions real human being were being put in were ridiculous. And finally the last part of this poem describes how the worst is over but there are many nightmares and memories to come. This was when survivors really put this as a bookmark in the back of their heads and could never forget it. I chose to use the quote “the pleasure of living is wonderful” because after the holocaust was over, the survivors felt a lot better after because their living conditions were so much better after being tortured years before. I chose this background carefully because I feel like “rust” was the one that gave me the feeling of grossness, and harsh living spaces. Rust usually forms on metals after they get old and used, so I looked at the Jews as “used up” and made a connection between the Jews and rust in this situation to choose the background. In conclusion, the holocaust was an absolutely scary time in history where the victims were in despair because they had lost their hope to live.
