The concept known as fee agency had never been established in the NBA until 1988. Before that time, players in the National Basketball Association were at the whim of the owners and general managers of the team they were on. After a player played the designated years on their contract, it was up to team if they wanted to resign the player or if they were to be traded to another team. Players were also not able to discuss any terms of whatever deal they were signed to. Owners were  the only people to discuss how much the player they were trading was getting paid, often leading to great players getting paid a lot less than their market value. The pioneer of free agency was Tom Chambers, an All-Star player who was the first player in NBA history to go through the free-agency process. He was quoted as saying, "Instead of being offhandedly used as a property, I had been wooed as a highly-sought after athlete by other teams".
